ELSIE LILLIAN SMART (nee HAYCOCK) January 18, 1934 - April 10, 2015 After a brief illness, and with her family by her side, it is with heartfelt sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Elsie Smart on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Grace Hospital. Elsie will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Donald William Smart, of 60 years of marriage; children, Wendy (Mark) of Devon, AB, Donald Jr. (special friend Lori), Maria (daughter-in-law), and Jody (Brent) of Winnipeg. Left to cherish Nanny's memories will be her eight grandchildren, Hilary, Tanya, Donna, Brandon, Michael, Paige, Meghan and Haylee as well as nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind to mourn, her two sisters, Hazel and Rita (Boyd); extended family; many special friends; and her dearest friend Mel Pageot of 37 years. Elsie was predeceased by her parents, Roy and Elsie Haycock; brothers, Cliff and Roy; and sisters, Mary and Hilda. On January 18, 1934, Elsie was born on the family farm in Inwood, Manitoba. In 1948 the family moved to Winnipeg. Shortly after, the Haycock family moved once again but this time to Dominion City where Elsie would meet her future husband. Elsie and Don were married on December 11, 1954 at the Young United Church in Winnipeg. After 28 years with the Federal Government of Canada, Elsie retired from the Department of National Defense as the Base Winnipeg Chief Switchboard Supervisor. She led a very active life right up until her final days. Elsie travelled extensively throughout Canada and Europe during Don's military career. She was an avid curler, baseball player and lover of animals. Her competitive nature was seen on and off the ice and in later years, Elsie became a competitive spectator as she watched her children and grandchildren compete in the sports they enjoyed. Some of her favourite pastimes comprised of maintaining an immaculate yard, planting flowers, betting on the ponies (especially the grey ones), playing the guitar, and spending time with the love of her life, her family. A celebration of Mom's life will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive, Winnipeg, MB. Honorary pallbearers will be Mel Pageot, Art King, Del St. James, Lois Spence, Pat McDonald, and Shannon Wentz. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Elsie may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or The Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3.
