VERA SILVERMAN It is with a profound sense of sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Vera Silverman, at the age of 98 years in Minneapolis. Our mother was a remarkable woman, mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. She was driven to inspire others to succeed, to be the best they could be, and to always strive to make the best of circumstances. As a businesswoman, she was in her element, but her main focus was to provide a loving home and lead by example to work hard at everything. Vera Silverman was born on July 15, 1916 in Russia, and came to Canada with her parents, brother, and two sisters to escape the oppression and turmoil following the Russian Revolution. She worked alongside her parents and siblings in the family grocery store and developed a strong work ethic that remained a part of her throughout her life. She spoke five languages even though she did not go beyond the 10th grade. She always regretted not having the opportunity for higher education, but made certain that her three children did. She had a long life, but a hard one, shaped by circumstances that were beyond her control. Through it all, she remained positive, confident in her abilities to give her children all that she could. We loved her and respected her more than words can possibly express. Vera was the wife of Fred Silverman, and was devoted to him through their 31 years of marriage. Sadly, he predeceased her on February 14, 1972, and she loved him and missed him for the rest of her life. She was wise enough to know that she had to make the best of things and not be a burden to her children. She remarried in 1976 and moved to Minneapolis to start a new chapter in her life. She made friends, joined charitable organizations, and did some travelling. When she was widowed again in 1985, she remained in Minneapolis and continued to enjoy life. Our mother leaves behind lasting memories for all of her family. She will be missed by everyone who knew her, loved her, and respected her. She was predeceased by her husbands, parents, siblings and all of her in-laws. She is survived by her children, Perry and Loreen Silverman of Minneapolis, Lyle and Anna Silverman of Winnipeg, and Ethel and Sid Soronow of Winnipeg. Also mourning and remembering a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother are Julie Silverman and Bard Borkon of Minneapolis (Joshua and Jack), Debbie Silverman-Shelist and Bobby Shelist of Chicago (Riley, Alexa and Skylar), Shawn Silverman of San Francisco, Chad and Neely Silverman of Minneapolis (Asher, Sruly, Yiskah and Miriam), Steven Soronow and Deborah Weber of Sarasota (Robyn and Noah), and Michael and Leanne Soronow of Winnipeg (Janna and Kylah). The funeral service was held graveside, Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, June 21, 2015. Vera Silverman was a true Woman of Valour and may she rest in peace.
