MURIEL EVELYN SWEET (nee JAMES) We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of a remarkable woman, Muriel Evelyn Sweet, peacefully at Victoria Hospital in the presence of her family, on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at the age of 100 years. Left to forever cherish Muriel's memory are her daughter-in-law, Landa Sweet of Sudbury, Ontario; grandchildren, David (Annette), Michael (Sheri) and Laura Kressock of Winnipeg and Sean (Tomoka) Sweet of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia; as well as great-grandchildren, Jason, Paul, Andrea, Lauren, Elana, Kelsey, Colin, Darren, Owen and Emily. She was predeceased by her husband Roy (1978); son-in-law John Kressock (1981); daughter Evelyn (1995), and son Robert (2006). Muriel was born on August 21, 1914 and raised in the farming community of Ogilvie, Manitoba. She spoke fondly of times spent in the surrounding communities of Plumas, Gladstone and Keyes in her childhood. Muriel married Roy Sweet in 1936 and they soon moved to Winnipeg where they raised two children, Evelyn and Robert, in the Daniel McIntyre area of the city. Following the graduation of their children, Muriel and Roy moved to Churchill, Manitoba where she was the head of housekeeping at the regional hospital in the late 1960s. They returned to Winnipeg in the early 1970s where she continued her career as head of housekeeping at the Marlborough Hotel in downtown Winnipeg until 1978. Muriel has been a 37 year resident of the Fort Rouge Ecumenical Apartments at 400 Stradbrook Avenue and a life-long volunteer at the Age and Opportunity Centre there. She has received numerous volunteer awards, including a Parliamentary Recognition Award in 2009. Muriel always put her family first and loved the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a fountain of youth with an exceptional zest for life. Even at the age of 100, Muriel was blessed with an active and fully independent lifestyle. She enjoyed her walks through Osborne Village and spending evenings with friends at "the block". Muriel remains an inspiration for her family and everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed. A Service of Thanksgiving for Muriel's life will be held on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Luke's Anglican Church, 130 Nassau St. North, Winnipeg, Manitoba, with The Rev. Paul Lampman and Rev. John Wortley, presider. Donations in Muriel Sweet's name can be made to Jocelyn House Hospice, 177 Egerton Road, Winnipeg, MB R2M 2W7 or www.jocelynhouse.ca. • I lived in "the block" with Muriel. I am one of the few young tenants, and back in 2001 my fiancée had passed, requiring me to move from where I was. In March of 2002 I moved to the block, and one of the people I met was Muriel. She always made me feel welcome and comfortable, and her sense of humour was priceless. I came to find out I had also known her son, though not well. The world will be a little less bright without Muriel, but the memory of her shall remain. - Posted by: April Girardeau (Friend) on: Jun 29, 2015

  • My sincere condolences to her family. I worked as a nurse there when Muriel was head of housekeeping. She was a happy fun loving lady with always a big smile for everyone.I don't know anyone else who could walk as fast as Muriel. She loved to have fun but was a task master and ran a tight ship. You could have eaten off our hospital floors. How lucky you were to have her so long in your life. Not many of us make it in relatively good health to 100 plus years. It was lovely knowing you Muriel and having you in my work life. Rest in peace My 'Sweet'. - Posted by: Sharon McEwan (co worker at Fort. Churchill General Hospital ) on: Jun 27, 2015

  • Dear David, Michael, Laura and families I was so saddened to hear of your grandmother's passing. She was a great lady. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time. You will, however, have loving memories to last you a lifetime. She will now be joining her loved ones in heaven and watching over all of you. May she rest in peace. She had a wonderful, productive life. My sympathy and condolences to you all. Joyce Peterson - Posted by: Joyce Peterson (Friend) on: Jun 27, 2015
