Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I met your father in 1962 in Thompson, Manitoba, where he was our parish priest. He had a heart of gold, was open minded, kind, humorous and helped countless people. I remember one time I spoke to him about a family that had nothing, sleeping on the floor, as newcomers. I told your father about them and said "they are not Catholic". He said "that is of no consequence, everyone is equal in my eyes." He brought a truck load of furniture to the family. On Sundays his church was packed to the rafters. After every service he had a new joke to tell us. Then, he would ask us to stay, as he had a surprise. He would close a curtain to separate the alter from the rest of the hall and suddenly fiddlers and other musicians appeared and there would be a dance, food and great comradeship. Many non Catholics came to the service as his sermons were famous for their wisdom and humour. He was a guiding force in our community. I recall how he intervened to prevent a strike between Inco and the union. He acted as a mediator with INCO and the union leaders and guided them to reach a compromise and avoid a strike. We moved to Squamish in 1964 but remained in contact. When he married he visited us in Squamish while he was on his way with his wife for a honeymoon in Victoria. He was one of the most remarkable men I have ever met. With his loving heart, wisdom and strong social conscience he made the world a better place. I was proud to call him a friend. - Posted by: Robert Middelmann (close friend and parishioner in Thompson, Manitoba) on: Mar 30, 2016
