Date of Passing: Jan 12, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJUNIUS JAKOB FRIDFINNSSON Junius Jakob Fridfinnsson passed away peacefully at Mt. Sinai Hospital, in Toronto, on January 12, 2016 at the age of 82 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Kristmundur and Jakobina; his brothers, Leifur, Numi, Kjartan and Skapti; his sisters-in-law, Dora and Lillian; brother-in-law Einar Oddleifson; and his nephews, Dirk and Roger. Junius is lovingly remembered by his companion and partner Grant McDonald; his sister Vordis Oddleifson; sisters-in-law, Grace and Norma, and numerous nieces and nephews. Junius was born on June 12, 1933 in Winnipeg and grew up on the family farm in Geysir, Manitoba. As a young boy, Junius was very creative and always had projects on the go. A model of the family home, built to scale and a Ferris wheel constructed from toothpicks were among his most memorable ones. Junius attended the Island School for his elementary education and later the Ardal High School, followed by the University of Manitoba, where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1957. Junius had a long and interesting career with CN Railways, where he worked on a variety of projects. Initially his work took him to northern Manitoba, where new rail lines were being constructed. In the 1960s, he relocated to Thunder Bay to work as a maintenance engineer, in charge of over 650 miles of mainline track. Another interesting project he worked on was the CN McMillan "Hump" yard in Toronto, the largest of its type in Canada at the time. In the 1970s, Junius became involved with CN/CP Telecommunications. During his tenure over 100 radio sites, including towers, buildings and roads were constructed coast to coast. In his retirement, being a lifelong learner, Junius kept abreast of the latest computer technology and new developments of all kinds, which he eagerly shared with his partner, Grant and family members back in Manitoba. Over the years, Junius maintained close ties to his family and the Geysir area, which were very dear to him. His visits "home" were cherished by family, including his many doting nephews and nieces who adored their Uncle Junni. In later years, when travel became a challenge, Junius frequently communicated by phone. His sharp wit and subtle humour made for lively and enjoyable conversations. Junius was a warm and wonderful man who touched the lives of many. He will be remembered with love and admiration. The family would like to thank the Mount Sinai Hospital for their excellent, compassionate care during Junius' brief stay there. As per his wishes, there will be no funeral. His ashes will be interred privately at the Geysir Cemetery at a later date. "The song has ended, but the melody lingers on." Irving Berlin

- Posted by: Ólafur (Icelander / Grant McDonald Fan) on: Mar 02, 2021
