Born: Feb 21, 1954
Date of Passing: Jan 12, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGUY OWEN PICKELL February 21, 1954 - January 12, 2016 The family of Guy Pickell sorrowfully announces his peaceful death on January 12, 2016 at Grace Hospital. Born in Winnipeg during a bonspiel thaw on February 21, 1954, Guy was predeceased by his parents, Garth and Anne Pickell. He is survived by his sister, Patti; his uncles Joe and Stan Sandulak and aunts Carol, Wilma and Betty Sandulak; as well as many cousins. From the outset Guy displayed remarkable scholastic aptitude, and at Clifton primary school he was elevated into Major Work, an accelerated learning program. In high school, he starred on Westwood Collegiate's "Reach for the Top" team. Sports of all kinds were his passion, and after attending Herzing Institute, he became a freelance sports writer and broadcaster. Given his commanding speaking voice, his enthusiastic play-by-plays were especially impressive. His encyclopaedic knowledge of the minutiae of baseball, football, hockey and curling was a source of amazement to his friends. Guy reserved a particular relish for local sporting teams the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Goldeyes, Jets, Brandon Wheat Kings, and maintained a loving eye on his hoard of sports cards. He cherished opportunities to attend live sporting events in the U.S. and Western Canada. Guy maintained a deep interest in politics. In 1993, he ran unsuccessfully for federal political office in Winnipeg-St. James. He was a member of the Oxford Club. Despite a number of disabilities that plagued his later years, Guy did it his way. Some of those who helped him do it, and to whom the family offers special thanks, are Bruce and Pat McBeth, his Home Care workers, CancerCare Manitoba and the staff of Grace Hospital and its palliative care teams. Memorial service to be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2015, at Bardal Funeral Home & Crematorium, 843 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg (204-774-7474); interment to follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Carman, MB. Those who wish to honour Guy's memory are invited to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

I would walk by Guy's house 3 times a day taking my kids to school and I always got a hello or he would wave from inside the house. He would have long conversations with my son on a variety of subjects. We were sad to hear he was sick. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Krystal (Neighbor) on: Jan 20, 2016

Our Deepest Sympathies to Patti & Family. Although difficult circumstances, it was so nice to be able to say hello to Guy during our family visits to Mom Anderson. Despite how he was feeling, Guy always had a cheery hello. God Bless Guy to his heavenly home. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Patti and the entire family. - Posted by: Janet Lewis Anderson & Bruce Anderson (Friends from Westwood) on: Jan 19, 2016

My condolences to the family. I remember Guy from high school and from Sturgeon Creek United Church. Back in 1996, when I was hospitalized with depression, Guy and Garth came to visit me one Sunday after church. Much appreciated. I thought Guy was a year older than me, but we were the same age. - Posted by: Cathie Morgan Matula (Friend from church) on: Jan 19, 2016
