WILLIAM MATHIAS NIELSON September 12, 1920 - January 31, 2016 It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, William Mathias Nielson, with family by his side, on Sunday, January 31, 2016, at the age of 95 years. Remaining to cherish William's memory are his children, Shirley, Noreen (Paul), Marvin and Marlyne; grandchildren, Lisa (Reg), Tracey (Dean), Candace (Craig), Joelle (Ryan), Ryan and Anne; and 11 great-grandchildren. He will also be fondly remembered by his extended family, Maralice Blagden and Jack Cox; sisters-in-law, Roslynn Nielson, Fern Nielson and Irene Nielson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Margaret, of 63 years; parents, Mathias (Matt) and Norene Nielson; and brothers, Ernest, Kenneth, Louis, Edward, Raymond and Walter. On September 12, 1920, Dad was born in Craik, Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm there where he learned hard work until he joined the R.C.A.F. Bomber Squadron in 1941. During this time, Dad met and married Margaret Isabella Reid in 1943. At war's end in 1945, he was lured back to the family farm to hard work and the raising of his family in Craik, Saskatchewan. Dad later became a grain buyer for National Grain Company (Cargill Grain) from which he was promoted to a position of Vice President of Western Operations for Cargill Grain, which meant a move to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1961. He retired early from Cargill Grain in 1979 to pursue numerous other business ventures as he was not one to relax for very long. Dad was a man with a strong work ethic and family values which he instilled in all of his children. His biggest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and later great-grandchildren, and the love of watching his horses run. On Friday, February 5, 2016, William's Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. in Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Avenue at Mount Royal Road, with Rev. Don Johnson, presider. We wish to thank the staff of Tower 4, Deer Lodge Centre, for their excellent care during his nine years of residency there, and to Joey of Drake Medox for her companionship when we couldn't be there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
