Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • I worked with Irene at The Gambia Technical Training Institute 1991-92. She was always pleasant to deal and very supportive of her colleagues and staff. May she rest in perfect peace. - Posted by: Mo Baldeh (Co-Worker) on: Oct 10, 2017

  • So sorry to hear about Irene. She will surely be missed by her family and all who knew her. Met her again recently at Harry Braun's funeral and had a wee visit with her. I boarded with her and her mom when I worked at the Co-op in Lowe Farm. Hello to Lee and Lou and families. - Posted by: Mary Dyck Mitchell Van Daele . (Old Friend from our Lowe Farm days.) on: Mar 07, 2016

  • We caught up again when visiting with family in Wpg while her husband John was recovering from his illnesses. She was quite stoic, then. We also met briefly last year at Harry Braun's funeral, a first cousin to my family and a more distant cousin to her. At 83, myself, I'm remembering long-forgotten high-jinks of our youth. I've called Killarney "Home" for most of my life. - Posted by: Helen (Dyck ) Rigby (Good friends during High School years at Lowe Farm, although I was two years ahead of her.) on: Mar 07, 2016

  • I was shocked and saddened to hear about Aunt Irene's passing. As a child, she was one of my favorites! I loved going to their house; she was a warm, welcoming and strong woman and she will be missed by many. to my cousins, I am so sorry for your loss...I hope you find comfort in memories of happy times, both recent and long ago. Take care, God bless. - Posted by: Terese Schroeder (Funk) (niece ) on: Mar 04, 2016

  • I was saddened to hear about Aunty Irene leaving us all. She was a lady of quiet influence. I was so impressed and influenced as a child and teen when she pushed on through life's challenges, and showed her passion for education, children and helping others. She took time to respond to all my many letters to her while she was in Botswana; I was so intrigued with her work as I so wanted to be a teacher. Over the years we continued to cross paths and shared ideas about education and students. I very much admired her strength and passion. The world will miss her... To my cousins, I am so sorry for your loss.. Corinna (Brunet) - Posted by: Corinna Derewianchuk () on: Mar 03, 2016

  • Growing up, I have fond memories of Aunt Irene and her sons (my cousins). A memory that I cherish is camping at Delta Beach with Aunt Irene, her two youngest sons and another one of my cousins. We had such fun swimming and camping together. Aunt Irene was friendly, loving, pleasant to talk with, and a wonderful person. She will be missed by many. My sincere condolences. - Posted by: Randy Brown (Nephew) on: Mar 02, 2016

  • Wayne and I feel very privileged to have known and worked with Alice for many years. She had a very sharp mind and I enjoyed sitting with her on coffee breaks and watching her whiz through a crossword puzzle. Today I enjoy doing crosswords because of her encouragement to keep at it "she said it gets easier the more you do them". I was just telling that story the other day...she was a great mentor. Alice also helped our daughter by proof-reading her thesis..always the teacher! She was an amazing very un-assuming lady. Our condolences to the family, she surely will be missed. - Posted by: Wayne and Pauline Matthes (Friend) on: Mar 02, 2016

  • Dear Neal and family, I was so sorry to hear about your mother's passing. Please know that I'm thinking of you and your family. - Posted by: Suzanne Nolette (Friend of Neal) on: Mar 02, 2016

  • I met Irene in the Gambia in 1990 and have since then held her as one of my most important mentors. I was in awe with her sharp mind. I am indebted to her for challenging me to never stop using my critical mind and not be complacent in my comfort and good fortune but to exert myself to help others enjoy the same. In losing her, we have lost a precious advocate for world justice. - Posted by: Johanne Lalonde (Friend) on: Mar 02, 2016

  • Irene was such a strong person and had lots of enthusiasm. My wife, Lesley, and I enjoyed her and admired her spirit. She had many interesting adventures in Africa. She was a good woman. - Posted by: George Rempel (Brother-in-law) on: Mar 02, 2016
