WILLIAM (BILL) REGEHR May 19, 1931 On Monday, March 14, 2016, our beloved, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, William Regehr passed away suddenly at the St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 84. His parents, Cornelius and Maria Regehr, his infant grandson James Regehr and his cherished son Dr. David William Regehr, predeceased him. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his daughter Carol (Farley) Pollock, his children's mother Florence Regehr and his grandchildren, Kristin (Adam) Speirs: Dr. Brydan and Sara Regehr and their mother Dr. Beth Regehr; and his great-grandchild Harper Speirs. He treasured his sister Elvira (Aron) Isaac, and his nieces and nephews. In his later years, he enjoyed going to the symphony with Pam Parisian. He was an enthusiastic sailor, enjoyed gardening, reading, cross-country and downhill skiing. William held university degrees in Economics and Education. His dynamic personality, strong work ethic, open-mindedness, problem-solving ability, led him into leadership roles. His careers included: Buyer for Canada Safeway, Superintendent of Schools for The Lord Selkirk School Division, Principle Secretary to the Premier of Manitoba, and Deputy Minister of Business Development and Tourism. Throughout his career, he maintained an active involvement with community organizations at local and international levels. His work included several international projects in Africa and the Caribbean. He enjoyed his position as past Chair of Red River College Board of Governors and past Board of Governor positions at the University of Winnipeg and Manitoba and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. He received the "Excellence of Life" award for his work on the International Coalition for Soil and Water Stewardship, and was also the recipient of many citations for his contribution to the work of other community service organizations. Always a believer in the goodness of humanity, he was an example of decency and integrity, he never waivered from his Christian faith and Pacifist convictions. He was always working for the good of the community and the love of family. A celebration of William's life will be held on Easter Monday, March 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., at St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church, 3 St. Vital Road, Winnipeg, MB. Reverend Mary Lysecki officiating. Lunch will follow at the church. William Regehr leaves a rich legacy of a life well served. He will always be cherished and loved by his family. It matters not how long you live, how soon the sand runs through the glass. It matters only that we give "Of service as we pass".

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Mr. Regehr was advisor to the Student Council when I was its President in 1964-65. He offered us an excellent and balanced mix of support, advice and encouragement. I remember him with fondness and great respect. A fine and principled man, Mr. Regehr was an excellent educator. I'm sorry that I didn't think to get in touch before. - Posted by: Bruce Sarbit (Student) on: Jul 21, 2016

  • It was always an education and pleasure to work for Bill who is now undoubtedly imparting flip-chart utilization skills and consensus determination strategies to the heavenly host! - Posted by: Bob Bridge (Worked for and with) on: Mar 26, 2016

  • I will always remember Mr. Regehr during my high school days in Selkirk. He was always fair, honest and a no nonsense educator. He led by example. I will cherish those memories. My sincerest condolences to the family. - Posted by: Willy Cole (Student) on: Mar 25, 2016

  • I first met Bill when we were both Directors of the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce. Bill chaired our Education Committee and wrote an excellent Piece on the education needs in our Province that was presented to the government and opposition. Later Bill and I crossed paths when he worked in the Premier's office and then as Deputy Minister of Tourism. I was working for the Tourism Association then and again he was very supportive of our work. Our paths then crossed again, due to his work and support at St. Mary Magdalene Church and my work with the Jubilee Fund.He joined our Board of Directors in April 2015 and immediately became the chair of two committees. I will miss him as a friend and I know we at the Jubilee Fund will miss him for the support that he gave to us. Our deepest condolences to the family - Posted by: Rita Roeland-Borthwick (Friend) on: Mar 22, 2016

  • Our deepest sympathies go out to Bill's family. We only met him briefly on our last trip to Winnipeg, but truly enjoyed all the information about our family history - Posted by: Walter klassen, John & Joyce Klassen (cousi) on: Mar 21, 2016

  • My sympathies go out to the family. Bill's truly was a life of service not just to his family, province and country but in later years he took great pleasure in assisting the people of less developed nations. Bill's influence on economic policy in Manitoba earlier was huge. One of his many achievements was the development of the original highly successful Economic Summit here in the early 80's, in the midst of the recession at a time when all sectors were hurting. He had a unique ability to bring people of diverse interests together. I last chatted with Bill when I spotted him high up in the Human Rights museum, where he was happily spending a lovely afternoon with his grandson and other family members last year. Rest in peace, Bill. - Posted by: Vic Schroeder (colleague in the Howard Pawley administration) on: Mar 20, 2016

  • Condolences to Bill's family at this difficult time. I spent most of my time with Bill during his time as Principal Secretary and his leadership role was critical to many issues that Manitobans can be thankful for today. A man of integrity and extreme kindness, the loss of Bill is certainly going to be felt by all Manitobans. - Posted by: Susan Hart-Kulbaba (friend) on: Mar 19, 2016

  • I first met Mr. Bill Regehr while attending High School in the early 60's. He was a teacher who led by example and left a lasting impression on me which has lasted all my life. We became friends after High School and I watched with great admiration as his many careers succeeded. The World has lost a great leader. My condolences to his family and friends.
