HELEN MARY CARTER June 9, 1918 - April 25, 2016 Peacefully, on Monday, April 25, 2016, Helen Mary Fraser Carter passed away at the Golden West Centennial Lodge in Winnipeg at the age of 98. Helen's memory will be cherished by her husband, Nick; son Jason and his wife Megan; and grandsons Sean and Aaron, all of whom lived close by during the last 25 years of her life. Helen was born in Kasauli, India, on June 9, 1918. From this British Raj base, the family returned to Inverness, Scotland, thence to Chichester where Helen completed her high schooling and teacher training. In the rolling downs of Sussex, its long beaches and interesting drowned valleys for boating, life before the war was perfect for teenagers. There, Helen met her future husband, who joined the R.A.F. in 1936. They married in 1941. Near each of the bases at which Nick served, Helen made a home. When he was out of the U.K., she taught school, continuing after the war to support the two of them while Nick attended University. They immigrated to Canada in 1951, where Nick became a civil servant, working mainly out of Calgary, Regina and Winnipeg in his several resource management roles. While seeing her prime task as sustaining a comfortable home life for her family - Jason was born in 1959 in Regina - Helen had many interests. She taught country dancing as a supplement to her early school teaching, loved to sail, cycle and hike, and clearly adjusted to many environments. She was an active supporter of groups involved in human rights and equal opportunity. At home, she was a good seamstress and an accomplished knitter. In the latter role, Helen often found the sheep, bought the fleece, carded and spun the wool then knitted a sweater or a coverlet. Above all, her advice and counsel was sought and valued by her expanding family. Our thanks go to the Salvation Army, and especially to the staff of Golden West Centennial Lodge. The milk of human kindness flows freely at the Lodge, to the great good fortune of all the residents. In compliance with Helen's wishes, no Funeral Service will be held.
