ANNE A. GREEN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Anne Green, on Sunday, April 24, 2016, peacefully at her home. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, David (Donna) Green, Sheila (Alan) Champagne, Allan (Maria) Green, Anita (Ernie) Green, and Janet (Tom) Hilliard; remembered as Nana to her 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and by her sisters, Christina Fitt in Nova Scotia and Betty Phillips in Manitoba, and brother Donnie Grant in Nova Scotia, as well as their families. She was predeceased by her husband Don; parents and brothers, Allister and Ernie Grant and Phillip Westbury. Mom was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Wilson and Elizabeth Grant. During the Second World War, many young men that were stationed nearby attended local social events including dances at the YMCA. It was here that she met the love of her life, Don, who would become her dance partner for the next 60 years. For many years, Mom taught kindergarten in our home in St. James but always regretted that she had not gone to university. Never short on determination, at the age of 46 and a mother of five, she commuted daily between Pinawa and Winnipeg and attained not one but two degrees. She spent the next 23 years teaching in Lac du Bonnet. Despite the fact that she spent time with children all day long, she was delighted to entertain her grandchildren on weekends or for extended visits during the summer. Mom was always busy with her hands. Warm pyjamas and fancy dresses stitched on her old Singer sewing machine, often late into the night, were always her children's favourites. As a young woman, she learned to weave and spent many hours at her loom, weaving fabric that would become scarves, kilts and various novelty items. Eventually, she designed her own tartan, the Red River Tartan. She was also an avid knitter and many a small hand has been kept warm in her hand knit mittens and new grandchildren would come home dressed in a new bonnet, booties or blanket knit especially for them by their Nana. Mom and Dad travelled to Europe several times but what they loved most was travelling North America in their RV and spending time with their camping family. Dad would drive while Mom had her nose buried in a book or was wearing down her pencil on a crossword puzzle. Mom's last camp outing was last fall, with some of her favorite campers. She was always keen for fun and games and she especially enjoyed a rousing game of cribbage or Tuesday night dominos with good friends. In accordance with her wishes, her life will be celebrated with a private family gathering. Mom always had a generous heart and a great love of children and would be honoured, if friends so desire, to be remembered through a donation to the Sunshine Fund (Manitoba Camping Association), 302-960 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB. R3G 0R4 or a charity of choice. Wojcik's Funeral Chapels & Crematorium, Winnipeg, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665 www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I remember Annie as one of the Grant Sisters. I met her only on her visits to Cape Breton when I was very young but she was a sweet, funny lady. Annie, her sisters Chrissie and Betty all have/had their mother's (Lizzie Grant) warmth, sparkle and good humour. Sorry I was not aware of her passing until now. She brought a lovely light into the world. (I am the daughter of the late Reta MacLeod (daughter of Jack Grant - Annie's Uncle). - Posted by: Beth MacLeod (Cousin) on: May 08, 2016

  • I knew Ann Green when she was a volunteer in the Pinawa Christian Fellowship. I was interested in Adult Literacy and she was one of the volunteers in our group. I remember visiting her home and her gentle smile. - Posted by: Hilda Young (acquaintance) on: May 02, 2016

  • Anne Green was my kindergarten teacher in 1959 in St James. My parents and the Greens became life-long friends. - Posted by: Brian Corbett (friend) on: May 02, 2016

  • I first met Anne when we lived in Lac du Bonnet and she had our oldest son in Kindergarten. Then, when we moved to Pinawa we found that she lived there and so unfortunately she would not teach our other children. She always had a smile and a few kind words for everyone. - Posted by: Elaine Greenfield (Acquaintance) on: May 01, 2016
