RUTH GUDGEON (nee KELLY) It is with sadness, that the family of Ruth Gudgeon announces her passing on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at age 89 years. Ruth passed peacefully in her sleep while residing at Deer Lodge Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her memory will be cherished by her loving husband of 70 years, George William Gudgeon; two daughters, Diane Kubas (Jim), and Pamela Moroz (John); grandchildren, Mark Kubas, Jennifer Kubas (Jonathan Friesen), and Katherine Moroz (Alex Helbren); great-grandchildren, Ben and Emily; sister Wanda Trites; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Stirling and Richard; and two sisters, Eileen and Olive. A proud Maritimer, Ruth was born on August 16, 1926 in Moncton, New Brunswick, which is where she met her loving husband George, otherwise known as Red to her. She followed him west where they settled in Winnipeg and established a career in serving others. She was energetic and creative and loved serving the Red Cross Youth for 25 years and The Stroke Recovery Association for another 20 years. During that time, Ruth initiated various programs at each of these organizations such as the World Neighbourhood Picnic where hundreds of children gathered to celebrate world peace and understanding, and the Diamond Dinners to raise funds to establish programs for stroke survivors and their families. Through her life she was a member of Rotary (West Winnipeg) Toastmistress Club, Winnipeg Central Business Association, The Parliamentarian Club of Winnipeg and Peter Pan (Children's Hospital). She enjoyed visits with her sisters at home or in the Maritimes, time at the cottage, gardening and most of all times spent with her children and grandchildren. A service will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 1:00 p.m in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue at Sharp Boulevard, Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a reception to follow at the home of Diane Kubas. Thank you to the staff at Deer Lodge for your compassionate care of our mother. Ruth was the boss of my very first job at the Red Cross. I was only 21 and she was such an amazing role model and mentor for me. She cared deeply for people and the community and always had wonderful and exciting ideas to implement. As I progressed through my life as a teacher, I never forgot about her and the amazing women at the Red Cross who were devoted to helping children across Manitoba. She will be missed. - Posted by: Linda (Work colleague) on: Jul 23, 2016

It was with great sadness that we heard the news of Aunt Ruth's passing. Unfortunately we never did make it out to Winnipeg to visit as she always reminded us to come out and visit one day. But we will always remember the wonderful visits we had with her and uncle Red at the cottage in Renfrew. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this sad time. Hopping you can find comfort in knowing what a wonderful person she was and good times had. Michael, Tina, Ronan (Quyon, QC) - Posted by: Michael, Tina, and Ronan Kelly (nephew ) on: Jul 18, 2016

I met Ruth 40 years ago at the Red Cross where she instilled in me a confidence I have carried throughout my life, especially my career. Ruth was also a good friend. We lunched for years after the Red Cross with Marybet and other gals. When I was Chief of Staff for Glen Murray, Ruth reached out again from the Stroke Recovery Association with a great fund raiser called Stars for Stroke Recovery. It was lovely to re-connect at that time. Although we lost touch in the last 10 years or so, I have thought of Ruth from time to time. Ruth was a strong woman who I admired greatly. I send my deepest condolences to her family. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Rose (Friend) on: Jul 17, 2016

My thoughts and condolences go out to George and family. Ruth had a life truly worth celebrating. She was an inspiration and comfort to many. I well remember her enthusiasm for life and people. She was a genuine problem solver. Ruth recruited me to the Stroke Recovery Association of Manitoba board. I enjoyed many years helping Stroke Survivors in conjunction with working with Ruth. It was my distinct pleasure to have known Ruth. Warmest Regards, Bruce Rutherford - Posted by: Bruce Rutherford (Friend) on: Jul 17, 2016
