Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBERNICE EILEEN FINES January 14, 1920 - July 16, 2016 Bernice died peacefully at West Park Manor at the age of 96. The youngest member of a large and loving family, she was predeceased by brothers, Clarence, Leonard, Cecil, and Ivan and sisters, Ethel, Evelyn, and Inez. She is survived by six nieces and one nephew who fondly remember her as a warm, generous, and loving aunt. Bernice was born in Gunton, Manitoba to parents Marie and Archie Fines and, as a young woman, participated in numerous social and sporting events in the community. In 1948, she received her Professional Teacher's Certificate from the Province of Manitoba and taught for a number of years in rural schools across Manitoba in such locations as Snowflake, Altamont, Rivers, Sperling, and the Pas. Eventually, she moved to Gimli where she taught first at the airforce base and then, after the closure of the base, in the Evergreen School Divison in the Town of Gimli. Bernice retired from teaching in 1979 and to this day, former students remember her as a kind and caring teacher who made each student feel like an important individual. Bernice thoroughly enjoyed her life and the many friends she made in Gimli. She was an active member of the Lutheran church and participated enthusiastically in community events. She traveled widely around the world and looked forward to spending winters in Texas with her sister Ethel. She was especially close to her sister Inez with whom she shared a special relationship. Bernice valued the bonds of family and friendship and, in return, she was loved and cherished as an sister, aunt, and friend. In this regard, Bernice's family would like to acknowledge the enduring friendship of Alice Zimmerman whose loyalty and caring concern were much appreciated, particularly in the final years of Bernice's life. Above all, they would like to thank Bernice's niece Vicki Peterson for the unfailing presence and love she provided to Bernice.

Bernice was an amazing lady and an exceptional teacher. She was the kindergarten teacher at the George Johnson School in Gimli when I got acquaint ed with her. I treasured her friendship and her expertise in working with young children while we worked together at the school. She worked tirelessly, knew and treated each child with respect and dignity. I am so grateful for having had the opportunity to have had Bernice be a part of my life. - Posted by: Grace Packulak (colleague and friend) on: Aug 24, 2016

Miss Fines was my grade 5 teacher when I attended school at the Gimli air base, have fond memories of those days. I remember she drove a Vauxhall, think it was blue. She was a great teacher and made sure all her students had the attention they needed. She had a great career in education and hopefully she enjoyed her retirement years. A grand lady for sure. My condolences to her family and friends. Rest in peace Miss Fines. - Posted by: Cam Malcolmson (Former Student) on: Jul 30, 2016
