Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALBERTA RUTH MCDERMID On August 11, 2016 at Grace Hospital Alberta Ruth McDermid passed away peacefully. Alberta was 100 years old. Alberta was born on July 19, 1916 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was the only daughter of Albert William Maxwell Ogston and Annie Elizabeth Ogston (Stewart). Alberta was named after her father Albert(a). Alberta grew up on Lipton Street in Winnipeg. She enjoyed visiting the farm in Arden when she was young and had many fond memories and stories there. She worked at Great West Life and later worked at Winnipeg Electric. There is where she met her husband George McDermid. Alberta and George were married on November 5, 1949 and they lived in Wildwood Park. Later, in 1951 they moved to St. James. Alberta and George were members of Elmhurst Golf and Country Club. They enjoyed going to West Hawk Lake and spending time with family. She spent many hours with her scrapbook and enjoyed making pottery. She was a loyal volunteer and having completed 25 years of continuous volunteer service with the Winnipeg Children's Hospital she was awarded and enrolled as a member of the Quarter Century Club. She was also awarded an "Honourary Life Member" of St. Johns Guild. She spent many hours preparing books for the Children's Hospital book sale. She loved to sit back relax and enjoy a good book. She was strong and had a great sense of humour and wit. Alberta was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Annie Ogston; loving husband George; her son John; and brothers Homer, Roland and Raymond. Alberta is survived by her son William; daughter-in-law Linda; grandchildren, Stephen, Michael, Cameron, Melissa; and great-grand children, Ashley and Kendra. Alberta's wishes were for a private service. She has been interred at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens with George. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Hi we are so very sorry to hear about your loss. Alberta was very good friends with my (grandma) Lucy Kowalski for many years. I remember Alberta as always smiling & a great fun lady!!
