MALCA SOLOMON It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beautiful wife, mother and grandmother on November 16, 2016 at the age of 78. She will be deeply missed and always remembered by her husband of 58 years, Fritz (Freddy); her children, Leora and Ruth (Perry); and her grandchildren, Madison, Elliot and Ari. Malca is also survived by her sister, Miri (Mordi) Rotem, sister-in-law, Rica Solomon as well as nieces and nephews. Malca was predeceased by her parents Yaffa and Itzhak Tall, son-in-law Kerry Pearlman and her brother-in-law Ricky Solomon. Mom was born in Romania and immigrated to Israel as a young girl. While serving in the Israeli army she was hitchhiking home for a weekend off and was offered a ride by a handsome young man. That young man was our father. Just three weeks following this "pickup", they were engaged and married soon after. In 1961, Mom and Dad immigrated to Canada with their baby daughter. Leaving behind her entire family, Mom was determined to help Dad build a life in their new country. Although this new life was not always easy, Mom displayed great strength and resilience. Her work ethic and can-do attitude were inspirational to her children and grandchildren alike. Along with Dad's parents, they started Simon's Deli which became a Winnipeg North End institution. Mom worked along side Dad in the business for 39 years. She was his best friend and most trusted partner. They were truly inseparable. Malca was a wonderful and devoted mother and becoming a Baba was undoubtedly the highlight of her life. She loved us unconditionally and always put our needs before her own. Her house was always open and we all knew that regardless of the hour, we would be welcomed with open arms, plenty of conversation and delicious homemade food. When it came to her grandchildren, the sky was the limit; she simply delighted in taking an active role in their lives and had a special bond with each of them. She also knew how much they loved their "cool" Baba. They will miss her terribly but she leaves a legacy of beautiful memories and life lessons that will enrich their lives forever. Malca had many talents and could succeed at anything she set her hand to. She always strived for perfection. She was an amazing cook and no one ever left Malca's dining table unsatisfied or with room for anything more. She was an avid reader and a silver screen movie aficionado. Though completely self-effacing, she was a beautiful and graceful woman. She was the kindest and most genuine person and everyone loved being around her. She was a true lady, inside and out. Malca enjoyed travelling the globe but one of her greatest pleasures was the many winters she and Dad spent in Hawaii. There, she was in her element and even answered the phone with "Aloha". Some of our family's most cherished memories are of vacations spent together on the beach in Waikiki. Malca was everything good and leaves a little part of herself in each of us fortunate enough to have known and loved her. Should you wish to remember Malca, donations can be made to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or to a charity of your choice.
