DAWN LEIGH KUNEC February 6, 1975 - March 30, 2017 Tragically on March 30, Dawn passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital. She will be lovingly remembered by her parents, Evelyn and Dan, her sister Cheryl, other relatives and close friends. Dawn was a vivacious young lady who, despite her battles with Crohn's, Colitis and cancer, always had a positive outlook. She faced life with courage and a determination that most of us could not contemplate. While her concern for others went well beyond her immediate circle. Dawn had a B.Sc in Biochemistry and graduated with honours from Red River College in Medical Laboratory Science. She loved her work as a lab technician at both St. Boniface and Health Sciences Centre, but her health issues played havoc with her career. When she was well, her interests ran from rock climbing to scuba-diving, canoeing, cooking, travel and archery. When ill she was both a voracious reader and knitter. Since childhood Dawn has always had a black cat in her life. Her parents now have the latest addition. Cremation has taken place and a private interment is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Darcy's Arc.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I know it's been nearly 5 years since Dawn had passed but I was going down memory lane today and came across photos from our sleepovers and friendship in Jr. High School. Dawn always had great taste in music and fashion and I admire how she was always able to walk to the beat of her own drum. She helped me come out of my shell in the process. Rest in Peace, Dawn and thank you for being my friend. - Posted by: Sheila Dzama-Symonds (Childhood friend) on: Feb 02, 2022

  • What do you say about someone who was quite literally larger than life? Having been Dawn's neighbour for a few years, I was the beneficiary of many Nut Free cooking/baking that Dawn would ensure was free of allergens. I know she also cooked and baked for a number of other friends who had dietary issues to which she was always cognizant and sensitive. Dawn had even designated a blue ramekin dish that she assured was prepared just for me! She always seemed to be more concerned about how other people were doing/feeling then herself. My sincere condolences go out to her family, Dan, Evelyn and Cheryl as well as her friends. - Posted by: Jennifer Zaretski (Neighbour) on: Jun 06, 2017

  • I am Dawn's chiropractor's receptionist. I always enjoyed seeing Dawn when she came into the office. Dawn was such a caring women - whenever I saw her she always had a bright outlook on life even with her many health problems. Dawn will be missed by anyone who had the privilege of meeting her. My heart breaks for Dan, Evelyn and Cheryl. I'm so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Lisa Schneider ( chiropractor's - receptionist) on: May 15, 2017

  • I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Dawn's family and close friends. I had the pleasure of supervising her for a research project several years ago. I knew her health was causing her problems but she was always in a good mood and willing to help others. She was a very nice person and I always learned something while talking with her. She will always remain in my thoughts. - Posted by: Helene Perreault (Chemistry Professor at U of M) on: May 01, 2017

  • So sad for Dawn to be gone at such a young age. Since she liked to be a private person, not everyone realized just how strong she really was to remain a positive, caring person despite all that she went through. She will be missed. - Posted by: Nick Kontzie () on: Apr 29, 2017
