WERNER GUTTEK 1957 - 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear son and brother, Werner Guttek. He leaves to mourn his mother, Ewaldine; brother Gerhard; sister Ingrid; his nephews, Justin and Ryan, his many cousins and friends, as well as his dear uncle and aunts, who cared deeply for him. He is predeceased by his father Bruno; his Uncle Paul and Aunt Elsa. Werner worked as draftsman most of his life. He took great pride in the many urban and local municipal projects he contributed to, including pipeline construction and the expansion of the Red River Floodway. He especially enjoyed working on challenging assignments in Thompson and Whitehorse. Despite his many health ordeals, he always greeted us with a warm smile and a loving hug. He was a caring, charming gentleman, who enjoyed nature, coin collecting, and hosting global bridge tournaments. A private family graveside service was held for Werner at Brookside Cemetery on May 15, 2017. "Rest in peace, our dearest Werner. We will always love you and miss you."

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I got to know Werner a few years ago when we played bridge online in BBO. He was a smart, cheerful, gentle soul, and in addition to bridge, we both liked the same types of music, especially Roy Orbison and Radiohead. He is already missed greatly in BBO, and it saddens me to know I won't be able to chat with him again. My sincere sympathy to his entire family at this unhappy time. God be with you all and bring you comfort in the upcoming days. - Posted by: Sandi Pound (friend) on: Jun 11, 2017

  • Werner and I started out around the same week in BBO years ago playing bridge and became regular partners for some time. He started out as Autobahn and over the years had a number of Nicknames ending up as Spiral snow. These various nicks were results of differences of opinions and his choice to avoid some - I did admire his steadfastness in his opinions. There was a regular group of us; a gentleman from India and another from Boston and Norway and another lady from Florida. We enjoyed many hours of bridge and casual chat. Werner shared much - he loved to introduce us to various types of music and "stories" . I really regret not meeting him in December last year; we drove to our son's in Calgary for Christmas and I had intentions of stopping in to meet Werner - it was time after years on BBO and skype and emails. However, we were caught in the horrible storm and the tie up on the highway for two days around Sault Ste Marie so we decided to go straight through; so sad. It took us four days. I did so have to apologize to him but he was his usual understanding and forgiving self. I certainly will miss him on BBO and believe I can say the same for many others. - Posted by: Sandra Kuzel (friend and bridge partner) on: May 26, 2017

  • I am so sorry to hear about the death of Werner. I never met him but chatted to him many times and he and I directed many bridge tournaments together over the years. He was always positive and a true gentleman. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers to him family - who he talked about often. - Posted by: Douglas Edwards (Online Bridge) on: May 24, 2017

  • Werner and I spent many a winter day zipping down hills on sleds and tobaggans at the creek. Always looking for big bumps and dare devil runs. Laughing and limping home. My condolences to the family and know that he was remembered and a friend. - Posted by: Tim Keep (Friend in elementary school) on: May 21, 2017
