Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHARTMUTH (ED) LICHTI January 2, 1933 - April 30, 2017 Hartmuth was born in Dirmstein, Germany. In 1952 he immigrated into Canada, via the Beaverbrae, joining his mother and siblings. Dad was a proud German citizen, but soon took to his new homeland and applied for Canadian Citizenship. The family collectively saved enough money, and purchased land on St. Anne's Road, building Alpine Perennial Gardens Nursery. They became involved in the building industry, founding Lichti Sewer, Water and Excavating, Lichti Construction, and were a partner in Guaranteed Homes. In 1966, Dad married Hildegard Loeffler and had two daughters, Kerstin (Antonio) and Astrid (John), and purchased a flower shop in the North End, renaming it Cosmopolitan Florists. On May 4, 1983, Hildegard passed, leaving Dad to raise two young girls. He continued with the flower shop with the assistance of his sister-in-law Gerda. Dad travelled extensively to central and South America with his old school friend Dorle, and enjoyed many high school reunions in Germany. As Dad got older, he travelled less, but he never worked less. He would tend the garden out back and water the roof top planters. He was known for his talent growing cacti, succulents and any manner of green plants, and many people sought his advice. His Christmas light display at the flower shop won him numerous awards. He was an avid animal lover having many pets. He loved sports, especially Formula 1, boxing, track and field, tennis, and soccer. He had a great love for the outdoors, spending many hours with his family canoeing, rubber rafting and hiking. He enjoyed the many wild flowers Manitoba is home to. Dad was a great handyman and jack of all trades. Dad loved crossword puzzles in both English and German. He was a grandfather to Kerstin Jr., Darrell Jr., and Julian Edward, and a great-grandfather to Laira and Scarlett, enjoying spending time with them. In 2016 Dad was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. After four weeks, he checked himself out of the hospital, returning home to his cat Maya. Celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 3:00 p.m., at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street, luncheon to follow. Dress lively. Flowers gladly accepted, he would have loved them.
