KATHLEEN MARY SCAIFE (nee SCHOFIELD) April 20, 1923 - June 14, 2017 Peacefully, with her family at her side, Kathleen (Kay) passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Oakview Place, at the age of 94 years. Left to mourn and cherish her memory are her daughter Barbara; son Robert; grandchildren Karen and Robert; sister Margaret (Ken); nieces Lynde, Robin, Kathy, Gail, Lynn and Susan; and nephews Kerry, Doug, Andrew, Larry and Craig. Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Finley; daughter Elizabeth; parents Stewart and Anna Bella Schofield; aunt Christina MacLeod; and brother Stewart. Mom was born and lived all her life in Winnipeg. Keeping in touch with family and friends was very important to her. She was a regular correspondent with relatives (hers and Dad's) on the West Coast and overseas in the "Old Country". She attended Riverview School and Kelvin High School, and she was still having reunions with her Grade 1 and Grade 11 classmates when she was in her 80s. Mom graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree (minoring in French) in 1943. She was a member of the University Women's Club of Winnipeg for over 70 years, where she made many dear and cherished friendships that she maintained all her life. Following graduation, Mom worked in the University of Manitoba Engineering Faculty office as librarian and secretary to the Dean. She subsequently worked as a legal secretary for CN Railways, and later Trans Canada Airlines, where again she made dear friends who she continued to keep in touch with all her life. In 1949, Mom married James Finley Scaife, who was Assistant Engineer for the Municipality of St. James. In 1950, Mom and Dad moved to Duffield Street where they raised their family and spent many happy times with their friends in a close-knit neighbourhood. In 1957, Mom and Dad bought a cottage at Dorothy Lake in the Whiteshell where they enjoyed many happy summer days. Mom was looking forward to celebrating our 60th anniversary of the cottage this year. Mom was a life-long student. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed challenging her mind with continuing educational activities offered at her University Women's Club. She was very creative and enjoyed knitting and crocheting, embroidery, and just about every craft you could think of. She studied art and enjoyed taking lessons and experimenting with drawing and painting in all mediums. Mom loved music of all genres. She had played the piano and organ, and was always humming and singing snatches of songs as she went about her daily affairs. She was an avid gardener at home and at the cottage, and loved her wildflowers. She was the family photographer, documenting important events. As a lover of nature's beauty, she was always taking pictures of sunsets, flowers, birds, and animals (especially the family cat!) Mom was always very active, excelling in tennis, badminton, and ping pong in her younger years. She loved riding her bike, swimming at the lake, and cross-country skiing with Dad in Assiniboine Park and at the cottage. She was always a great walker, no matter what the weather. Mom loved to travel and she and Dad explored the Far East, South America, Egypt, the Panama Canal, the British Isles and Europe, and many U.S. destinations. Mom was a loving, generous and caring person, always worrying about everyone else. Family and friends were the most important things in life to her. You could always count on Mom for support. She had a wonderful sense of humour, always coming out with a hilarious comment or story, usually directed at putting someone else at ease. It was with this sense of humour and incredible strength that she addressed life's most difficult challenges. She also found great comfort in her faith in God, being a member of Deer Lodge United Church until it closed, and then Sturgeon Creek United Church. She was always very grateful for the visits, cards and plates of cookies from the SCUC Pastoral Care members who were very attentive to her while she was at Oakview Place. We have been blessed with the finest mother and grandmother we could ever hope for, and we know she will always be there in spirit to guide us. We would like to express our appreciation to Mom's Oakview Place "family", especially the third floor staff who took such good care of her. Cremation has taken place and a private funeral service has been arranged. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed in Mom's memory to the University Women's Club of Winnipeg Scholarship Fund, 54 West Gate, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2E1; the Elizabeth Scaife Nursing Education Fund, The Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0X3 (204-944-9474, www.wpgfdn.org); or a charity of choice. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • For some reason, before I wrote my Christmas card to Kay on behalf of my mom Muriel, who passed away in February 2017 in her 94th year, I decided to check the obituaries for Kay in Winnipeg just in case. I was saddened to find that Kay too had passed away. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Muriel and Kay were kindred spirits. They used to skate together on those cold Winnipeg days. They played sports together such as tennis and they were among the students who relished in the excitement to see the King and the Queen Mother riding through Winnipeg on the train in the 40s. My mom Muriel spoke so fondly of Kay and as was mentioned in the obituary, they kept in contact with each other by phone on their birthdays and at Christmas time. Their bond was a strong one. They shared their lives even after their lives went in separate directions. When they reconnected each time by phone or by letter, it was as if they never parted. I know that Kay was deeply saddened to hear that her friend Muriel had passed away. Now I can imagine their souls connecting once again. I know that the memories of your mom will continue to comfort you in the days ahead. Much love, Muriel’s Daughter Liz xoxox - Posted by: Elizabeth (Liz) Watson (Daughter of Muriel Watson (nee Stoker) Muriel was one of Kay’s best friends. ) on: Jan 09, 2018

  • Kay's kindness and consideration of others are character traits I admired and valued. She was so thoughtful of others and a true humanitarian. It has been a honour knowing Kay and being a part of her life. Linda - Posted by: Linda Daniels (Family Friend) on: Jun 24, 2017
