SYDNEY GILL On Tuesday, June 27, 2017, Mr. Sydney Gill passed away at the age of 82 years. Syd was born in 1935 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and grew up in the town of Galashiels. Syd served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers and the British Parachute Regiment. With the Parachute Regiment, he served in Cyprus as part of the peace keeping mission. In 1960, he moved to Winnipeg to be near his sister Elizabeth (Betty) Conn, her husband Ian and their daughter Linda. He worked at Crescent Creamery, where one of his milk deliveries brought him to a canteen where John Fairhurst worked. John introduced Syd to his daughter Rosalie and the two married in 1964 and had two children, Ian and Sharon. Syd worked for Crescent Creamery and then Modern Dairies for more than 25 years where he rose through the ranks and became the Head Shipper for the company. He took his family on many trips to Vancouver and Victoria; Victoria in particular reminded him of Scotland and he loved walking around the harbour. Syd was very proud of his Scottish heritage. Syd is survived by his loving wife Rosalie, children, Ian and Sharon, son-in law Maarten, grandchildren, Sheena, Drew and Alex, great-grandchild Leah, and his niece Linda, her husband Peter and son Allan, as well as other close relatives and friends here and in Scotland. We'd like to thank the home care workers who looked after Syd and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service at Station 11 for their care over the past several years. At his request, cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held. Flowers are graciously declined. Please consider a donation to The Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer Society in support of research into Lewy Body Disease. Sorry for your loss Rosalie and Family. Syd was a great guy and my favorite dairy guy as a kid. We were lucky enough to get the broken cases of ice cream treats as kids from him. My mother and Rosalie worked side by side for many years and did car pooling, so as kids we met Syd many times and her always had treats for us. He was a real gentleman from what I remember as a kid and loved his family immensely. Hope you are enjoying some frozen yogurt in the sky. - Posted by: John Cherka (Old Friend) on: Jun 30, 2017
