THEODORE (TED) NOWICKI
Born: Jan 13, 1931
Date of Passing: Aug 17, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHEODORE (TED) NOWICKI It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Ted Nowicki on August 17, 2017 at Donwood Manor Personal Care Home. Ted was predeceased by his children Robert and Ronald, mother Pauline, father Michael, stepsister Millie (Wally), Diana's mother Teenie and father Ignace, and brothers-in-law Lionel and Malcolm. He leaves to mourn his wife of nearly 62 years, Diana, his two sons Douglas (Araceli) and Gary, and his four granddaughters Marisa, Kyra, Ana and Kyla. Ted was born and raised in Elmwood on January 13, 1931. He attended Lord Selkirk School before his employment with the City of Winnipeg. Dad worked his way up the ranks and retired in 1984 as the Superintendent of Stores and Tools. In his 36 year tenure, he proudly used a mere three days of sick time. Ted met the love of his life, Diana Joyce Porubanec in the early 1950s and they married on September 10, 1955. Over the years, Dad enjoyed volunteering with many organizations. He proudly served with Civics fast ball, Chalmers Community Centre, Red River Valley Sports League, East Side Eagles Football Club, Elmwood Giants Baseball Organization, and Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association. Dad humbly donated blood to the Red Cross over a 150 times, earning him a platinum recognition award. In 2002 Dad was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame Honour Society. Dad met and maintained many friendships because of his volunteer service, closest of all was "Uncle" Joe Sandrk. On top of all his community involvement was his love and commitment to his family. Always the provider, often with personal sacrifice, Dad was always "there" for us supporting and encouraging our sporting activities. More often than not, Dad could be found driving his station wagon filled with kids and equipment to our games and practices, always with a cigar in tow. Sunday family dinner was Dad's favourite time with us all, especially when Mom would make his beloved sour cream and onions. Dad's proudest moments came though Doug and Gary's achievements, but nothing could top his love and pride for his four granddaughters. Our family would like to thank the staff at Donwood Manor who were so compassionate regarding Dad's needs during his time there. As per Dad's wishes, no service will be held. Dad's ashes will be placed fittingly in his niche at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you support the Elmwood Giants Baseball Club and Giant's Field.

Sorry to hear of Ted's passing....a friend just posted that on Facebook. This takes me back to 1966 when I first started working for the City of Winnipeg. I worked next door at the Water and Sewer building and Ted was at Stores, tools and supply... I didn't have a car at the time and relied on the bus... After work, Ted would see me walking to the bus or standing at the bus stop and stop and ask if I wanted a ride... he would take me as far as Henderson Hwy. and I would catch the next bus there. I think it was a Rambler wagon he had at the time and he always had those big cigars. Even tho I haven't seen him in approx. 40 years, I still remember his kindness. My condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Wes Parkes (Former co-worker) on: Sep 16, 2017

As a coach with the Eastside Eagles in the 1970s, I remember Ted as a kind and dedicated volunteer who was very generous with his time. All of the people who played or coached in the organizations in which Ted worked, I'm sure are grateful for everything he did. I was saddened to hear of Ted's passing, my sympathies to the family. - Posted by: Aubrey Settee (fellow volunteer with the Eastside Eagles) on: Aug 29, 2017

R.I.P. Mr. Nowicki, reading your obit was to say the least funny, as I have told my wife many times about you standing on the snowbank of rink #1 in the middle of winter with a cigar being clenched between your teeth. I am proud to say that I do the same thing today, you were a hero to many of us. My father Roy and Joe along the Jim Paton's mom and dad gave us something kids today don't get. You were a true friend and you are now up in heaven with all the others cheering on Chalmers hockey teams, and the Giants and Eagles. To Gary and Doug we were friends as kids and I am sorry for your loss. I just moved away from Elmwood a few years ago but never forget the people that made me the man I am today and your dad was one of them. - Posted by: Kevin Davis (friend) on: Aug 29, 2017

My deepest condolences go out to Diana, Douglas and family and Gary for your loss of Ted who was such a special person with his unique personality and sense of humor. I was taken back in memory to when I was staying with you over the summer holidays and helping in the garden picking beans. Thank you for all the special memories and may God bless you and all of your family - Posted by: Roger Bobbee (cousin) on: Aug 26, 2017
