DOREEN MARY PITZEL January 25, 1933 - September 4, 2017 After a long, hard fought battle with cancer, Doreen Pitzel, surrounded by her family, went home to her Lord and Saviour on Monday, September 4, 2017, at the age of 84 years. Remaining to cherish Doreen's memory are her children, Keith (Terri), Kevin (Cheryl), Garth (Doris) and Jerilyn; grandchildren, Amy, Colin, Colleen, Jared, Makena, Nathan and Stephen (Natalie); companion George McKay; sisters, Marion Wirtz and Ardel Hautzinger (Leonard); numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Mary Fleischhacker, husband, Lloyd, and brother-in-law, Roman Wirtz. Mom and Dad were married on July 14, 1954 in Pilger, Saskatchewan. The early years saw them working in many locations, eventually they moved to Regina and finally in 1963, they took up residence in Winnipeg. Mom and Dad had just over 44 years together where they enjoyed family, friends and neighbours. Many happy times were had with the Doran Bay neighbours and they always had an open house, a hearty meal and good company for the many friends and family who stopped by. They loved to travel, to dance and enjoyed the cottage life at West Hawk Lake. After Dad's passing, Mom's religious beliefs became stronger. She was fortunate to have a group of friends that kept her active and engaged in living life. She was very happy to have George come into her life and he renewed her zest for it. Even though their time together was short, they certainly had an impact on each other's lives. Bringing great joy to her life was being a foster parent to 61 children, an active member of her church, a member of the Ladies of the Royal Purple, a member of the Catholic Women's League, floral arranging, decorating, knitting and crocheting, cooking and baking, entertaining, playing cards, her time at West Hawk Lake, gardening, dancing, attending Bomber games and attending five out of town Grey Cup games. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, 320 St. Charles Street, Winnipeg, with Rev. Fr. Michael Wollbaum, presiding. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. The family would like to thank everyone who phoned, dropped in to visit, brought meals and treats and to provide Mom with Blessings and Holy Communion. Also, we would like to thank the staff at the Women's Hospital 5th floor for the compassion and care given to Mom and to us during her last days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a children's charity of one's choice. Thinking of all the Pitzel clan at this time with my sincere sympathy and wishing you love and an abundance of memories. Doreen was such a Doran Bay icon. For many of us little gals on Doran, we enjoyed her pampering, pincurls, setting spray and braids. I have so many memories from breakfast with the Pitzels after mass, sleep overs, time at the cottage at Westhawk, weeding at the gardens and snack time on her picnic table. She was so good to all of us, and did the flowers for so many of our weddings, hosting showers and gatherings and our going away. She made the best funfetti birthday cakes, and always put some coins in for our surprise (confession: she always told me where the quarter was). She was my sponsor at confirmation and my trusted supplier of popsicles. The entire Pitzel family played a huge role in my and my families life, and many of the kids blessed to grow up on Doran. I am grateful she played such a role in my life. Doreen was the Mama Bear on Doran, you could get away with NOTHING when she was on watch - almost; right Garth ? lol. Rest in peace Mrs. P, you will be missed, we are thankful, we love you and we remember. - Posted by: Michele DeCorby (friend) on: Sep 10, 2017

Doreen and I lived near one another and made mud pies together as young girls, in Pilger, SK. After marriages we ended up living in close proximity in Winnipeg. Our friendship with Lloyd and Doreen continued and grew. She was always there when we were in need of anything. and always included us in their social events. She was an excellent cook. She was a foster mother to over 60 babies and she knew how to look after these youngsters. Their chosen daughter Jerilyn, was fortunate to be chosen from this group by Lloyd and Doreen. Our son Trevor had the honor of being their Godchild. Lloyd passed away in 1998. Life moved on and Doreen found George McKay to be her perfect partner, and we express our heartfelt condolences to him, and all of Doreen's family, relatives and friends. I will miss you friend, love Sheila, (and Bill). - Posted by: Sheila and Bill Toth (Very close friends) on: Sep 07, 2017
