Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRONALD JAMES HEWETT November 15 1932 - September 27, 2017 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Ron Hewett, aged 84, on Wednesday, September 27. He leaves to mourn his wife Dorothy, of 63 years; his children and grandchildren: Kurt (Tammy Johnson), Haley and Kelsey; Todd (Debbie), Kristian (Keaton) and Andrew (Karlen); Richard (Kathee), Joseph, Rebecca (Derek East), Elisabeth and Olivia; Laura (Ashley Smith), Joshua and Maia; his sister Shirley Cipryk; brother Bob (Vera); brother Ken (Anthea); sister-in-law Helen Millar, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ron was predeceased by his parents William (Bill) and Mary Hewett. Ron was born in 1932 in Winnipeg, MB, the oldest of four siblings and grew up on the family farm in Oak Bluff, MB. He was an intellectual man and a gifted mechanic and athlete. He loved cars, planes and all sports but his first passion was baseball. In 2005 Ron was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. He met his "beautiful brunette", Dorothy Rhodes in 1950. They married in 1955 and had four children. Ron and Dorothy lived in Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, and Ottawa. Ron worked as mechanic for Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada) until he found another passion in his life, air traffic control. In 1965, Ron and Dorothy moved back to the family farm where he farmed and worked as an Air Traffic Controller for the next 35 years. An important part of his ATC career was being an instrumental part of the "Gimli Glider" airline incident that happened in 1983. Over the years, Ron was an outstanding leader in the Oak Bluff community, helping develop the arena and baseball diamonds as well as coaching various hockey, ringette, and baseball teams. Ron enjoyed travelling and took up downhill skiing in his 50s. Even though Ron had many passions, his true passion was his family. Spending endless amounts of time with them he truly was a pillar of support. He will always be remembered as a private man with unlimited energy, strength and perseverance, who always gave his best for others. He will forever be remembered amongst us in heart, mind and thought as a man who made a difference. He was dearly loved and will be missed. With Ron's failing health, we know that visits were difficult. However, moving forward please feel free to drop in for a cup of tea with Dorothy. We wish to thank Starbuck Home Care, MacDonald Ambulance, and the Victoria General Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Oak Bluff Community Club. A private memorial service will be held at the family farm in Oak Bluff along with a private interment service at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Ron was a great Man, Mentor, Friend,Coach and Neighbor. He might have been the only Hockey Coach in the world that coached and refereed at the same time and in between periods would drive the tractor to flood the ice without taking his skates off. He was such a good athlete who could outrun us kids in baseball and football with his big heavy work boots on. There was a picture of our hockey team that hung in the Oak Bluff Rink that told the story of Ron , all the kids were looking at the camera and smiling , Ron was looking at the kids and smiling. I see so much of him in his kids and grandchildren and am proud to call them my friends/family ! - Posted by: Kevin Anseeuw () on: Oct 10, 2017
