JOYCE KUBY (nee SHAW) Joyce passed away on October 7, 2017 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her parents Wallace and Caroline (nee Campbell), husband John (1998), daughter Sharon (1973), siblings, Gordon, Stewart, Jean, Zelda, Doreen and Ian, and lifelong friend Edith Egan. She is survived by her children, John (Linda) of Comox, B.C., Sandy (Rita) of Abbotsford, B.C., Shenta (Gary) Arnold of Courtenay, B.C., Callie (Tom) Barry of Belcarra, B.C., D-Anne of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Daniel (Marisa), Trevor (Tiffany), Rebecca (Josh), Kirsten (J.P.), Jeffrey (Connie), Kyle, Michael, Kelley, Dion (Marlee) and Katrina; and great-grandchildren, Colton and Jackson. Also by her sister Patsy Tummon of Etobicoke, Ontario and many nieces and nephews across Canada. Thanks to special friends Barb and Ray Burr and Shirley Helloffs who were wonderful companions for mom after most of her children moved west. Joyce was born on September 25, 1921 on the Shaw family homestead near Bangor, SK. Her childhood was spent on the farm and after graduating from high school she went on to attend the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1945 and took a job at the hospital in Sheridan, a small mining town in northern Manitoba. There she fell in love with a hard-rock miner from Swan River, Manitoba named John Kuby. They were married in 1946 and started a family in 1948. The mine at Sheridan closed in 1949 and the owners, Sherritt Gordon Mines moved the town over the frozen muskeg to a new site at Lynn Lake. They settled in and soon five more children were added to the family. John was very involved with the steel workers union and so impressed the brass that he was hired as a staff representative and transferred to Winnipeg in 1961.The family began a great adventure moving by train to the big city. The children had never seen a T.V., an elevator or a city bus. A brand new house was purchased at 248 Wallasey St. in St. James and Joyce lived in that house until 2014 when she moved to the Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residences. Once the children were all in school, Joyce went back to university to upgrade her nursing and then worked at the Winnipeg General and then Oakview Place. Joyce was an active member of St. Andrews Anglican Church Woodhaven and was involved with the Women's, Girls, and Junior Auxiliary while she raised her children. After retirement she and John spent many years exploring North America in their Volkswagen van until health problems prevented John from traveling. Mom had a very sharp mind. There was always a jigsaw puzzle going on her dining room table. She was up for any game of cards from whist to poker but she really excelled at bridge. She participated in Five-pin and lawn bowling into her nineties. She did the New York Times crossword everyday and if you ever beat her at a game of scrabble you are among a select few. We are so thankful that mom was full of life until the end, even traveling out to B.C. in 2016 to meet great- grandson Jackson and in June of this year to attend her granddaughter Rebecca's wedding. The family would like to thank the staff of the Grace Hospital and the Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residences for their kind services to mom over the past few months. It is not often that people get to go out on their own terms but Joyce did. After suffering a brain hemorrhage Joyce chose to leave with the help of the M.A.I.D. program and the full support of the loving and caring children that she'd raised. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB.
