MARGRAT BENNETT (nee MURRAY) Margrat peacefully passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, at 96 years of age. Margrat was born in Winnipeg on May 1, 1921 and spent her entire life in Winnipeg. She attended Greenway and Daniel McIntyre Schools and had worked at Canadian Bread. After her marriage in 1948, she became a stay at home mom. Knitting was Mom's passion and she would spend endless hours ensuring that everything she knit met her high standards. For many years she volunteered her time to knit for the Grace General Hospital Gift Shop. She also won numerous ribbons at the annual Red River Ex for her knitted rabbits and 1st prize for her knitted geisha doll. Mom loved to bake and decorate wedding cakes. She learned to make the roses on the wedding cakes by observing the baking staff at Loblaws and then she would go home and practice until they were perfect. Mom previously attended Chalmers United Church and was involved with the Cub Scouts and the Women's Auxiliary. She was also a cook at a number of summer camps in the 1960s and 1970s. Mom was young at heart and always surrounded herself with younger friends and acquaintances. She had the unique ability to speak to strangers and obtain their life histories within a short period of time. Margrat was predeceased by her husband Gordon; her sister Jean Lillyman; her twin sister Isabel Haines (Wilfred); her brothers Donald Murray, James Murray and William Mackenzie. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law Robert Bennett (Dorothy); and her sisters-in-law Laura Bowser (George) and Florence Hewitt (Ernie). Mom will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Darlene (Edward); her son Murray (Lil); grandchildren Nicole (Kris), Sean (Joyce) and Jason (Marites); as well as many great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and friends. Mom was the heart and soul of our family and all who were fortunate enough to know her, treasured her caring nature, her quick wit and her wonderful sense of humour. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The War Amps or the Winnipeg Humane Society. The family wish to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Health Sciences Centre Emergency and GD5, Medicine Unit as well as all of the staff at Calvary Place Personal Care Home for their loving care of Mom while she was a resident there. In keeping with Mom's wishes there will be no formal funeral service. A private family gathering will be arranged at a later date. • While visiting our mother at Calvary Place my brother and I would often get the chance to talk to Margrat and Darlene. We could tell by our short conversations that Margrat must have been a force in her heyday. We loved the picture her with her cat on her room door! Darlene and Murray, we send our condolences, but know you had one great mother! - Posted by: June & Garry Pospishell (Daughter and son of a resident at Calvary Place Personal Care Home) on: Dec 08, 2017

  • Margrat was truly the embodiment of 'feisty'. I lived a few doors down from her on Ashburn Street, and as I got to know her from visits or watching her clean up her yard, planting flowers, and sweeping the back lane (!), and listening to her stories (the Japanese doll made a distinct impression) I came to admire her spirit. Even after the broken hip, she continued to keep going. Stubborn, perhaps, but admirable. She gave life and character to the street, for sure. - Posted by: Lynne McCarthy (Former neighbour) on: Dec 08, 2017
