SYLVIA MEYERS Following a brief illness, Sylvia Meyers passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital on December 19, 2017, at the age of 89 years. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, Celia and Nathan Kornberg, her husband Joseph Meyers, her daughter Judith Lee, and her sister Ruth Belzberg. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Michael Meyers (Jacqueline) and Rabbi Robert Meyers (Miriam); her grandchildren Adam, Daniel and Benjamin Meyers, Noach Meyers (Yocheved), Yosifa Lehman (Yonah), Moshe Meyers (Yocheved), Hillel Meyers (Shira), Eliana Segal (Yosef), Hodaya Savin (Naftoli), and Yeshaya, Chana, Beryl and Shani Meyers; her sister Molly Ross, and her brothers Allan Kornberg and Harvey Kornberg (Wendy). In addition, Sylvia will be greatly missed by her 14 great-grandchildren and by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Sylvia was born on November 6, 1928 in Winnipeg, and lived in Winnipeg for her entire life. She grew up in a close, loving family in Winnipeg's North End. She married her husband, Joseph, in August, 1954. Her three children followed in April 1959, May 1960 and June 1961. Tragically, she lost her first child, Judith, in October 1961. She, along with her husband, brought up their two boys, teaching them the values of hard work, love and loyalty and honesty. Sylvia was a wonderful daughter, sister, mother and aunt. Her family relationships were extremely important to her. She delighted in happy milestones and celebrations, but she was extremely resilient through tough times as well. She also maintained close relationships with her many friends, some of whom she'd known for over 60 years. Some of her happiest times were spent sitting out on the porch, talking and laughing with friends until late at night. Sylvia took great joy in her sons' families, and enjoyed close relationships with her daughters-in-law and her 13 grandchildren. After 50 years in her Garden City home, Sylvia moved to the Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence. She spent a little over six years there, renewing old friendships and creating new ones. Sylvia faced multiple health challenges in her later years, but always bounced back. It was only in her final few months that she tired of fighting. Although too numerous to mention individually, we wish to thank all of the physicians, nurses and other medical staff who provided care to Sylvia at multiple hospitals and clinics over the years. Thanks to many staff and residents at the Shaftesbury who helped Sylvia during her time there. We also wish to thank her many caregivers over the years, with a special thanks to Margarita who provided Sylvia with superb care and companionship in recent years. Funeral services were held at the Etz Chayim Synagogue on December 20, 2017, officiated by Cantor Tracy Kasner Greaves. Pallbearers were Sylvia's grandsons, Adam, Daniel and Benjamin Meyers, nephew Brent Apter and great-nephews Benson and Eli Shapiro. Daniel gave a eulogy in loving tribute to his Baba. Interment was at Bnay Abraham Cemetery. If desired, donations in Sylvia's memory may be made to Congregation Etz Chayim, CancerCare Manitoba, or a charity of one's choice. We will miss you greatly, and we will never forget what you gave to us or the life lessons you taught us.
