VERNA ELIASSON (nee SPOONER) It is with sadness that Verna's family announces her passing on January 23, 2017 in her 98th year. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Pat, Arlene and daughter-in-law Carol; grandchildren, Ken (Heidi), Karin, Tricia (Rob) and Caitlin; great-grandchildren, Alex, Rachel, Jackson, Brandon, Tyler, Maddy and Riley; also numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Mary Anne; all her siblings, Edna, Irene, Sam, Bob and Rita; her husbands, (Norman and Bob); son Gordon, and sons-in-law, Harv, John and George. Verna was born and raised in East Kildonan and spoke often of her wonderful childhood and simpler times. She was an avid reader, puzzler and knitted many a dish cloth, scarf and mitten set and beloved dolls clothes. Verna loved playing cards with her friends and family. She was known more than once to keep her great-grandchildren up late playing a fierce game of Rummy! In her later years, she took up colouring beautiful pictures, something she continued to enjoy until her passing. She believed there was nothing that couldn't be fixed with a strong cup of tea, a tradition instilled in many of us to this day. We were blessed to have Mom home with us until she was 96. She was in The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg for the last 15 months, during which time she had family and friends caring for her every day. The family would like to thank the 3rd floor staff for their care, compassion and kindness to all of us. Our heartfelt love and thanks to Roberta and June who were always there for Verna and us over the years. Verna was the embodiment of a feisty Irish spirit that outsized her diminutive figure. Her loyalty to her family emblazoned a path that she cut with hard work and a sharp intellect to ensure a better life for her children and their children; a legacy that is sure to live on while she carries on with a well-deserved rest. A private family service was held. The pallbearers were her grandsons and great-grandsons. In lieu of flowers, we encourage everyone to give their time by visiting a personal care home, where there are so many dear souls who would love some much needed attention, conversation and of course, a strong cup of tea!
