Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJENNIE SYLVIA SQUIRE Our blessed and beloved friend to many, Jennie Sylvia Proudfoot Squire has peacefully slipped her mortal coil the evening of February 16, 2018. She is now on her next grand adventure, surely in fine company. She will be deeply missed and memories of her will be dearly treasured. Sylvia was born July 23, 1925 to Madge and Henry Proudfoot in New Glasgow, NS and died peacefully at the Grace Hospice in Winnipeg, at the age of 92. Sylvia was predeceased by her loving husband James Squire on February 12, 2012. They were married for 60 years. Left to mourn Sylvia and celebrate her, are her children and grandchildren; Phillip and his daughter Alex; Sandy and Roger and their sons, Riley and Carter (Lizzie); Peter and sons, Justin, Steven, and Collin (predeceased); Aria and her sons, Asher (Ashley) and Elan. Sylvia was a proud Nova Scotian and although she left Nova Scotia as a young adult she never forgot her Maritime roots. Sylvia's only sibling, her brother Rhuland, predeceased her more than 40 years ago, but Sylvia remained very close to her sister-in-law Alma and visited Alma and other relatives in Nova Scotia regularly. Sylvia moved to Montreal in her early 20s where she worked in pharmacy at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and lived in a flat with wonderful girlfriends. She spoke of this time in her life often. Sylvia met Jim in Montreal (at the encouragement of Jim's sister Stella and Mum's first cousin Art, who were married to each other). Jim was a Newfoundlander and their common Maritime roots bonded them. They soon married and moved to Duncan, BC for Jim to practice radiology on Vancouver Island. Phillip and Sandy were born there. Sylvia and Jim moved to Winnipeg in 1954 when Jim joined the Manitoba X-Ray Clinic. Peter and Aria were born in Winnipeg. Jim and Sylvia remained happily in Winnipeg for the rest of their lives. Sylvia was a vibrant caring woman who raised her children, volunteered in the community and enjoyed many pursuits including tennis, art, travelling, and reading. The family had a cottage at Victoria Beach for many years and we all have great family memories of our times there. Going out with Mum was a fun and exciting experience of warmly meeting whomever we came across. She had a real radiance about her. She was a wonderful friend and maintained long friendships throughout her life, and right up to the end, continued to make new friends! Her volunteering included the local community club, Winnipeg Art Gallery, being on the board of Middlechurch and for many, many years volunteering at the Victoria General Hospital primarily in the Oncology Department. She believed in giving back to the community and both our parents believed in helping those less fortunate. Sylvia loved tennis and played passionately for many years with her husband and many players who often then became friends. In recent years she met weekly at Tim Horton's with a group of her tennis ladies, who although no longer playing tennis, maintained their friendships, exchanged books, news, etc., and endless conversation. Sylvia also belonged to an investment club for many years, a book club and art group where they gave papers well into their 80s. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed discovering new books and authors and discussing them. Mum's energy and joie de vivre as well as her zest for learning will remain with all her children and grandchildren. A very special occasion was her 90th birthday party where we all gathered along with many friends to celebrate this joyous occasion. We have felt privileged to have our mother with us in good health, of strong mind and so supportive until recent months when she struggled with cancer. Our thanks to the Canoe Club Retirement Community, Manitoba Palliative Care Team, St. Boniface Palliative Care and the Grace Hospice for supporting our mother in recent months. A celebration of Sylvia's life will be held in the next few months. We miss her dearly. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 830 North Drive at 1:00 p.m. April 21, 2018. Please come celebrate Sylvia's life with a service and reception. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit www.chapellawn.ca Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 204-885-9715

Sylvia and I became fast friends when she moved to the Canoe Club last year. I loved her spirit and her no-nonsense outlook on life. I enjoyed our weekly visits but could see her struggling near the end, which was difficult to watch. My last visit with her at the Grace Hospice was lovely and easy and I am grateful that I can treasure our many conversations and time together. I miss her dearly.
