EDNA MAY REID
(nee SHAMRAY)
Growing up fourth of eight children on a mixed farm in western Manitoba she learned at an early age how to pitch in and work hard. She came to Winnipeg at the age of 18 and after attending Dominion Business College she worked for various businesses.
Edna married Cameron Reid in 1951 and then raised three children in Fort Garry. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before his passing in 2002.
Mom went back to work in 1966 and was the manager of the Pembina Curling Club for 20 years (as well as an honorary life member). She acquired a keen interest in curling and was an avid fan and supporter of all the Manitoba teams. Her sports interests extended to football and hockey and she couldn't be interrupted if there was a game on.
Mom spent her retirement years looking after her family. Cooking great meals, chauffeuring, even helping with home renovations and demolitions. She came out to the farm every year to plant the garden so it was "done right", never wasting time with flowers because after all you couldn't survive off eating flowers.
Always up for an adventure she travelled to Europe at 80, Hawaii at 90 and more recently Kingston, ON and Victoria, BC.
We will dearly miss the gracious woman that would drop everything to help anyone who asked and asked so little for herself. She taught us all never to take things for granted and be thankful for what we have.
She will be in the hearts of us all forever. Left to cherish many wonderful memories are her children, Donna (Norman Short), Murray (Liliane) and Stuart, grandchildren, Kristie (Andrew), Philip, Jeremy (Kelsey), Patrick, Maraleigh, Vanessa, Gavin, Keenan, Liam, Siobhan, and great-grandchildren, Everett and Owen.
Special thanks to the MAID team as well as the CancerCare Palliative Care team. Your compassion and professionalism were very helpful at a most difficult time.
As per Edna's wishes a private interment is being held in Oak River, Manitoba.

I lived on Lavenham Cres. from 1998 - 2002 and I got to know Edna as both a Landlord and friend. I remember her mostly for her kindness and generous nature. She always wanted to see the good in people. And those lovely, lively eyes, so expressive! She was always interested in how my boys were doing and always took time to talk to them. My condolences on your loss of a mother who was so obviously loved and respected. Sincerely, Janis Richards - Posted by: Janis Richards (Friend and former tenant) on: Jun 25, 2019

It always felt like home; this heart of dear Mrs. Reid who was busy with something yet had time to include everyone. You, her children each have that same open heart and grace. I am so enriched by Mrs. Reid's many years of wisdom and bold honesty. A mother to many. Most special were the little ones to Edna whose unlimited supply of food and time out to listen to a good funny story with sharp wit interspersed. Energy and getting things in order and done were the mark with important visits to family. Missed are your bright blue eyes and perky voice that were a delight and a great laugh from the soul. Rest in peace dear one; and to each of the family of whom I feel so privileged and close keep walking together as we were taught. - Posted by: Connie Paul Hamel and family (Friend always welcomed like family) on: Jun 16, 2019
