TENIE HERZOG
(ANTONINA PAWELKO)
May 17, 1931 - July 9, 2019
Tenie is survived by her daughter, Barb Bobychuk (Wayne), daughter-in-law, Laura Hertzog, grandchildren, Jesse O'Neil (Krystal), January Melillo (Dennis), Mike Melillo (Maureen), Chris and Chelsea Hertzog, great-grandchildren, Caden Melillo, Kaylyn and Kingston Rafael, extended family Kelly, Nathan and Nova Zahn, Connor Grenier and Makaylee Radcliffe, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Tenie was born and raised in Beausejour, MB and moved to Seven Sisters Falls in 1955 after marrying Willie. Together they raised their three children until his passing in 1980. Tenie continued to live in the family home and entertain her grandchildren until the yard and house became too much for her and she moved into Winnipeg in 2000.
Tenie loved the outdoors, gardening and helping people. She worked in several different establishments around the area including the Seven Sisters Hotel, Pinawa Hotel and Pinawa Hospital until landing her dream job as a Labourer for Manitoba Parks Branch where she worked out of the Nutimik Yard until her retirement in 1995. After moving to Winnipeg, she continued to garden and planted flowers every year to brighten up her surroundings. She also planted some raspberry bushes at the Kiwanis Home where others still get to enjoy the berries today.
A once vibrant woman, her candle slowly started to flicker when she was diagnosed with dementia and had to be moved into a personal care home where she resided until her passing.
Her grandchildren wanted the share these memories:
- Growing up next door to her and always knowing her door would be unlocked - Jesse
- Running through the garden and letting us put ice cream and treats on her store tab - Jan
- Summers spent making donuts and perogies; buckets of ice cream that HAD to be eaten so the pails could be filled with wild blueberries - Mike
- Keeping a good secret...grandma would let me take her car to school while she cleaned our house - Chris
- She taught me how to make her cucumber salad and Dad would be my taste taster - Chelsea
As she gave in life, Mom is still giving in death. Her wishes were to be placed into the body donation program at the Dept. of Human Anatomy and Cell Science - Faculty of Medicine - U of M so others may continue to learn from her. She will forever have the distinction of rendering Service after Death to her fellow men and women.
A special thanks to all those at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg-N2 for taking such amazing care of Mom while she was with you. You made her feel safe and cared for and made our decision to place her with you that much easier. Billy and Leona, thank you for your visits, it always raised her spirits, especially the fries. Maggie, your letters were always a bright spot for her, thank you.
A private family gathering will be held when her ashes are returned to us.
Donations can be made in Mom's name to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or pet rescue of your choice
For those that knew her, raise a glass, put on Norman Greenbaum and sing, "When I die and they lay me to rest, Gonna go to the place that's the best, When I lay me down to die, Goin' up to the spirit in the sky!" Celebrate an extraordinary woman, an extraordinary life.
Your candle may be out but the light
you left behind will shine on forever.
Always in our hearts, until we meet again.

So sorry to my dear friend Barb and family. - Posted by: Ray Barbour (Friend) on: Jul 18, 2019

To Tenie's family I extend my most sincere and heartfelt sympathy. She loved you all so much and spoke of you often. She cherished and treasured you. I cannot tell you how very sorry I was to hear from Laura that Tenie had passed away. She was and will always be a mentor, caregiver, confidante and true friend to me. As a child I spent countless hours at her home - yes Jessie the door was always open. I learned so much from her - gardening, cooking and most importantly hard work. Tenie's work ethic was second to none. She was a wonderful cook and there was always a place at her table. We worked together at the Tourist Hotel in Seven Sisters. We always considered our biggest success to be the fact that Tenie would tell me to rush the plates out to the restaurant before management could see. She firmly believed that the customers should receive a full plate of delicious food for the money they were spending. Each time we accomplished that we would laugh and hug. She was so touched when I told her that I was going to share my tips with her. She was, after all, the cook. I recall going back to the kitchen often with compliments about her cooking from the customers. She would beam. When I received a letter from Barbara telling me Tenie was in Middlechurch. I continued to send my letters, but I was so saddened and devastated to not be able to call her any longer because she would not have known me. She always called me Maggie and I can still hear her voice say it today. She often told me how she cherished my friendship and she was very supportive when my parents passed away. She was very happy that I married my husband who she knew through her "Dream Job" at Manitoba Conservation. It was a dream job for both my husband and I as well. The obituary that you, her family have written for her describes Tenie in every way. She gave and gave and continues to give. The memories shared by her grandchildren are a true tribute to the wonderful person and woman she was. I will "raise a glass" turn on the music and toast Tenie. She was beautiful inside and out and I will miss her forever. I was so very humbled to see my name in her obituary it touched me deeply and I shed more tears for my dear friend Tenie.
