MARY DELBAERE

On Saturday, July 6, 2019, Mary Delbaere died peacefully in her sleep at the Tache Centre in St. Boniface at the age of 102 years.
She will be deeply missed by her 11 living children: Albert of Winnipeg, Mauri (Donna) of Sydney, Australia, Ray (Wendy) of Gimli, Frank (Judy) of Vancouver, Teresa (Satish) Kashyap of Ottawa, Linda (Vianney) Vandewater of Melville, Roger (Lynette Husum) of Edmonton, Irene (Phil) Pines of Winnipeg, Leona (Paul) Vandale of Winnipeg, Anne Morsette of Calgary and Louise (Dean) Scammell of Winnipeg; by her daughter-in-law Carol Delbaere, and also by her 30 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, and by many other family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Achiel, to whom she was married for 63 years, by her son Louis (Carol), her brother Bob Stowe and her sisters, Alice Stove and Martha Beaubien, her daughter-in-law Madeleine Delbaere and son-in-law Grant Morsette.
Mary was born in St. Boniface on April 14, 1917. Her parents, Marcel and Theresia Stove, immigrated to Canada from Belgium to make a better life for themselves. She excelled at school and completed high school with honours. She worked for the Federal Government in Ottawa briefly before returning to St. Boniface in 1939 to marry Achiel, whose parents were also Belgian immigrants. Over the next 50 years her life was devoted to caring for and fostering the development of her 12 children in the home they built on Plinquet Street in the Belgian quarter of St. Boniface. With help from her mother and sister who lived together next door, she worked tirelessly to clothe, feed and nurture her children who always knew that they were individually loved and valued even in such a large family. She encouraged her children to help each other, play games together and respect and cooperate with each other. She valued education and demonstrated by superb example the importance of working diligently to fulfill your responsibilities. After her children were grown her favourite activity remained feeding her extended family a large Sunday meal and later playing cards together. After she moved to the Tache Centre in 2011 she enjoyed receiving visits from her many children and playing cards with them. She was in remarkably good health until she suffered a stroke two days after her 102nd birthday.
Her family greatly appreciates the wonderful care provided to Mary by Tache Centre staff during the past eight years she lived there.
A funeral mass celebrating Mary's life will be held on Tuesday, July 16 at 11:00 a.m. in the Holy Family Church, 778 Archibald St.

  • We were very sad to learn about Aunt Mary's passing. She was a wonderful, kind lady and we always felt welcome dropping by the house on Plinquet Street to see her, Aunt Alice, and whoever else was there for a Sunday meal. She certainly had an incredible life, raising 12 loving and successful children. We were so glad to come and see her during a happy occasion at the 100th birthday party. Our deepest condolences, Rob and Debbie Stowe and family - Posted by: Rob Stowe (Nephew) on: Jul 15, 2019

  • Sincere condolences. Your mother did a great job raising all of you and making sure you got a good education academically and a good moral compass. She was rewarded with a long good life. God Blessed you all. - Posted by: Mary & Dan Diplock (Friends) on: Jul 14, 2019

  • To our Delbaere Family we send our deepest sympathies. We would like to show our sympthathies by attending along with visits with some of Ken's family. These visits are far between. hopefully not only at a funeral. Due to a pre-arranged appointments we will not be able to attend on Tuesday. Our elderly neighbor needed his knees replaced at 87. He will improve his mobility greatly after many years of procastinating. This appointment should be his final visit with the doctors in Winkler, Manitoba. That's 1 and a half hours from home. These pre-arranged appointments are hard to let go and reset dates. We have made several visits prior to this last one next. Ken Ruta sends his deepest regrets on not being able to attend. He would have liked the catch up with many family members and will really miss that too. Please stay in touch. we would love that. Gracefully yours. Ken and Lynette Ruta. • Mary was one special lady. In addition to looking after her own family of 12, she hosted our family (of her sister Martha) of 14 on many Sundays over the years that we grew up together. All of her children turned out to be responsible, caring and well educated, and are undoubtedly the greatest tribute to her life. She was the last of our connection to her generation and will be greatly missed by our family as well as her own. - Posted by: Arthur Beaubien (Nephew) on: Jul 13, 2019
