Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I was privileged to work for Hubert for 2 summers - 1966 and 67 - on a special Metro Parks Dept. crew assigned to top-priority landscaping projects around the city. He was a very good leader and boss, who set high standards. Under his direction, our crew had great morale and did high-quality work of which we were quite proud. Many of us were university students with little experience at landscaping, but we got great training, had fun, and still remember those summer jobs as among the best we ever had. Several students from that crew went on to successful professional careers: Murray Conklin - a senior lawyer with Manitoba Justice; Vic Kuzyk - a high school principal; Morris Mott - an NHL and Olympic hockey player who went on to be a distinguished history professor at Brandon U; Bruce Decker - well-known Guess Who and Deverons band member, and Dave Reycraft - senior grain executive in Hong Kong. Richard Grover and Rich Urbanski were also students on the crew. I had a long career in the Manitoba government as a deputy minister and Cabinet Secretary. Vic Barika and Vilmush (Bill) Dovidija were master stone workers and permanent crew members. Another was Wally Salamandyk. Hubert’s boss was Gunther Schoch, landscape architect, and the department head was Andy Currie. There were others too, but my memory for names is failing. Hubert was well-respected by all of our crew and we much appreciated his patience and support, and ultimately his approval of the hard work we were trained and motivated to do under his leadership. Hubert didn’t talk much about his childhood during World War II but he took pride in his roots in Germany, his green Volkswagen, and was also proud to have settled successfully in Canada. He will be well remembered. - Posted by: Jim Eldridge (Former employee of Hubert’s) on: Jul 16, 2019

  • Many happy memories of Hubert. We would have a couple of beers, laugh and have some serious, some fun, mostly fun, talks. I always remember going to Kenora during the ‘79 beer strike. Standing in line for one case each. I wish Editha lots of love at this time. Auf weidersehn my friend. Dave Craig. - Posted by: Dave Craig (Laxdal Road neighbour from the past) on: Jul 13, 2019
