RUTH ALLAN SMITH
(nee CARTER)
August 16, 1922 - November 21, 2019
Aged 97

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that on November 21, 2019 we lost a beautiful soul known as Mom, Granny and Rudi to those who knew her best.
Ruth Allan Smith, born August 16, 1922 on Berry Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Roland and Annie Carter, was a vivacious woman who enjoyed the good things in life: Family, Friends and Beer. She carried herself with grace and dignity and held discretion and diplomacy in high regard. Ruth more often than not had a smile and very much enjoyed a good laugh. She was loved by all that met her. Ruth was, and always will be, an inspiration to the people in her family.
Ruth's early years were spent between Winnipeg, MB and Vancouver, BC. She enjoyed travelling by train where her father spent many years working as the head concierge in the restaurant carriage. As a young woman she worked as a parcel girl for Eaton's in Winnipeg and quickly rose through the ranks. She always spoke highly of her time working there. In the early 1940s she met the love of her life, Swinburne Rodney Smith while attending a dance in Grand Beach, MB. They married and spent 30 wonderful years together, having two children, Swinburne William and Sydnie. Ruth lost her husband too soon at his age of 53, a hard time for the entire family. After her husband's passing, she worked as a secretary at Linwood Elementary School during the 1970s and early 1980s. She was proud of her time there. She met John Paul in the 1970s, who became her partner for 27 years until his passing in 2001. After her retirement she spent time travelling, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, Kyle, Kelly and Nicole relaxing in the backyard with a beer and talking about life, riding her bike through Assiniboine Park (a favourite pastime of hers) and watching her favourite sports; golf in the summer and curling in the winter. In 2003 she lost her son, Swinburne William, due to cancer. In her later years she enjoyed spending time with her family, going for drives through Assiniboine Park, doing word searches and the daily Jumbles (she was a Jumble wizard!), "soup and chips" and of course enjoying a beer. Ruth lead a very full life and the thing she held closest to her heart was always family.
Ruth will lovingly be remembered by her daughter Sydnie, her daughter-in-law Myra, her grandchildren, Kyle (Elisa), Kelly (Roger) and Nicole (Conroy), her great grandchildren, Lilas, Andrea, Leo-Paul, Cain and Jack, and the McLachlan family.
We would like to say thank you to all our friends and family who have extended their love and support to us during this difficult time.
And to Geea, Rhonda, Elaine and the all staff at Poseidon Long Term Care, thank you for all you do. You are wonderful!
Ruth will be interred at a private family gathering beside her husband, Swinburne Rodney Smith. As per her wishes no service will be held, instead a small gathering of family and friends to enjoy a beverage and cheese in her honour.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Hi Sydnee and family, gosh after I lost touch with Ruth a few years ago when she moved from Woodlawn, I wondered often how she was doing, and would ask Ethel Miller if she knew how she was doing!! They would once in a blue moon have a “chin wag” on the phone. Gosh I loved your mom so much and missed her when she moved and I didn’t get to do her hair anymore. One of if not theeee nicest lady’s I’ve ever met and I was happy to read that she became a great grandma.. how lucky you all were to have such a wonderful person in your life for so many years. My deepest sympathy to you and all the family - Posted by: Sandra Magnusson (Her old hairdresser at deer lodge and friend ) on: Nov 30, 2019
