MARY FINNEGAN
With sorrow and love, Mary Finnegan's family announces the passing of their dear wife and mum, sister and auntie. Mary passed away on January 27, 2020, in Winnipeg, with Brian, her husband, by her side. True to her generous spirit, Mary gave the gift of life through organ donation in the early morning of January 30.
Mary Finnegan (Henderson) was born in March 1954, in Conon Bridge, Scotland, to Eileen (Harris) and William John Henderson, and shared happy memories growing up with her siblings. From an early age, Mary was known for her warmth and empathy. When Mary reached adulthood, she pursued studies in health care, gaining a post-secondary nursing education in Cambridge, England.
In 1979, at the age of 25, Mary moved to Canada. Arriving in the spring, Mary spent her first few months in Regina, supporting her sister, Trish during the birth of her son, Iain. Later that year, Mary moved to Buffalo Narrows to work at the local nursing station. It was there in Buffalo Narrows that Mary met Brian Finnegan. Mary and Brian married in 1981, and together they raised three children - Shawna, Heather and Rory.
A true force of nature, Mary is remembered with deep affection by her extended family in Canada and Scotland for her generous nature, the beautiful sounds of her laugh, and the vibrancy of her spirit. Mary was open and attentive to the world around her, taking great care in forming deeply meaningful connections with her family and friends.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held on her birthday, in March 2020. Please contact Mary's family at mary@finneganfamily.net for more details.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the West Central Women's Centre in Winnipeg.

I met Mary and her husband Brian in 1985 in La Loche, SK, where Brian managed the local Hudson's Bay store. She was a straight forward type of person. She was strong willed (which was a benefit to the working condition she and others had to endure at that time) and overall a very nice person. The world will miss her strength. - Posted by: Rodney S carrow (Old acquaintances) on: Aug 17, 2025

She made me laugh, but rarely laughed at my counter jokes (that was the funny part). She was warm, intelligent, detailed and particular. We researched our family together, yet only met 4 times. She was a stickler for details, like myself. In Mary I found a frustrating kindred spirit that motivated me to be yet even more precise than I am by nature. As a technical team, many mysteries were solved. Over the last 5 years, our contact had become minimal. I just discovered she had passed as I tried to contact her to inform that another of our family members had passed. I am shocked, saddened and cannot imagine the loss her immediate family endured and continue to deal with and heal from. Passionate vital souls cross our paths in such random and sparse frequency during our lifetime. Oftentimes they are unseen, unrecognized, and may even disturb or confound. I am proud to say I knew how fortunate I was to encounter her, see her, know her and know that she too saw myself in utter clarity as a soul worthy of her truth. Goodbye Mary...I am so sorry it took me almost 11 months to realize you had departed. - Posted by: James Harris (Distant Cousin) on: Dec 11, 2020

Mary was a patient of ours at Odyssey Dental. I was extremely saddened to hear of her passing. She was always so friendly and always asked about my life and cheered me on! There was not a time that she didn't come into the office and greet me with the biggest smile and ask how everything is. What a wonderful lady!! I will truly miss her!! - Posted by: Lisa Newstead (acquaintance) on: Aug 25, 2020

I met Mary when I went to work at Pelican Narrows Nursing Station in northern Saskatchewan and remember her work ethic, caring nature, and wonderful laugh. We kept in touch over the years mainly by sharing family events via Christmas cards and I always enjoyed hearing her stories. I am profoundly saddened to hear of her passing. My deepest condolences to the family. - Posted by: Alice Howarth (Nursing colleague) on: Apr 13, 2020

Mary worked with me as part of a team at the then Addenbrooke’s hospital. She was the most fantastic caring nurse and has continued to stay in contact since then. She has brought perspective to my life when I was very ill and often made me laugh. - Posted by: Jan Howieson (Colleague) on: Mar 27, 2020

Although I had not seen Mary for many years I am still fortunate enough to have considered her a friend. A kind and generous spirit, there was nothing Mary wouldn’t do for her family and friends. My sincere sympathies to Brian, Shawna, Heather and Rory. You now have an angel watching over you in heaven instead of on earth. - Posted by: Jennifer Willems (Highland dance friend) on: Feb 12, 2020

My deepest, heartfelt condolences to the family. I know, first hand, how truly amazing and absolutely wonderful Mary was. Her fun loving spirit and loving nature was felt by all, and will be sadly missed. Having the blessing of her friendship for the past 12 years, I know her abundance of love, directly stemmed from the love she had for her family. You could see the absolute pure joy and happiness in her eyes, every time she would talk about them. Her family was her everything. My heart is filled with gratitude, for the blessing of Mary’s friendship. I will cherish every memory we shared, and hold it tightly to my heart. She was truly one of a kind. And although my great memories of her will carry on forever..... it’s those hugs I will miss the most. Céline Klassen - Posted by: Céline (Friend ) on: Feb 08, 2020
