SISTER AUGUSTINE REY
(SOEUR JEAN-MARIE)
1936 - 2020

Faith in the risen Lord eases the sorrow of Sister Augustine Rey's passing on February 13, 2020. She died at Actionmarguerite Taché Centre at the age of 83.
Sister Augustine was born on October 25, 1936, in Saint-Claude, Manitoba, to Auguste Rey and Louise Carel. She is survived by two sisters, Aline (Gérald Bourrier) and Hélène (Christian Françoise); one sister-in-law (Marguerite Lavigne); and two brothers, Robert (Cécile Lécuyer) and Gérald. She was predeceased by her parents; one brother Denis, and two sisters, Madeleine (Fille de la Croix); and Odile; and her husband Roger Debreuil; as well as one sister-in-law Suzanne Burgoyne. Apart from her family and the members of her congregation, she leaves to mourn nephews and nieces she loved dearly, as well as numerous friends in Canada and in Brazil. She also leaves to mourn one special aunt, Odette Bazin.
Sister Augustine did her schooling in Saint-Claude. In 1954 she began her religious formation with the Sisters of the Cross in Saint-Boniface. Her final commitment took place in August 1961.
After Normal School, Augustine taught elementary school for a number of years in Saint-Malo, Sherbrooke, Saint Adolphe, Willow Bunch and Bellegarde. In 1964, she took a year off to study at Regina Mundi in Rome.
From 1972 to 1981, Augustine served as Provincial Superior of the Canadian Province. It was during her sabbatical in Spokane that she was asked to work in Brazil where she stayed from 1983 to 2014.
Sister Augustine had a very warm personality; joyful, open, welcoming, she was easy to love. The children appreciated her good humour and easy smile. As Provincial Superior we remember her as kind and understanding, patient and courageous. Quite adaptable, she enjoyed her pastoral work especially with the sick and aged in Brazil. People were important to her and she loved the Brazilians who loved her in turn.
A woman of faith, Augustine embraced life fully and remained serene in spite of difficulties. Her last months of life were difficult but she never complained. She lived to the full the charism of les Filles de la Croix.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Villa Aulneau, 601 Aulneau Street, Winnipeg, MB.

- Posted by: Emilienne Bohémier & Donald Bernard (Donald est cousin) on: Feb 18, 2020

  • I met sister Augustine in Saint Marcos church in Limeira, Brazil. She was always peaceful and happy with everybody. Someone so special like her can never be forgotten. May her soul rest in peace with God. - Posted by: Rafaeli Fires (Friend from Brazil (Limeira, São Paulo)) on: Feb 17, 2020
