Passed away at the Fairview Personal Care Home, Brandon, MB, on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at the age of 91 years, Douglas Glenn Birch, of Treherne MB.
Dad was born on January 23, 1929, in Neepawa, Manitoba, to Joseph and Miriam Birch. He is the youngest of 13 and was the only surviving member of the family. He received his education in Eden and Neepawa. At the age of 22, he began a career with Pettit Painting & Decorating and continued to work there until 1961 when he started with United Grain Growers. In 1952, he married Lois Waggoner and in 1954 they had their first son, Douglas Trent, two years later, they had their second son Kevin Dale, four years later, a daughter, Cheryl Leigh.
In 1988, he retired from United Grain Growers after working for the company for 27 years. Dad was a friend to so many. Always a smile or acknowledgement to anyone he met. He loved to and always had to be busy. He was an avid sports participant and spectator. He was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame twice...once with Eden and once with the Neepawa Cubs. He was very active in the community...a volunteer ambulance and firefighter and eventually Deputy Fire Chief. He loved his family...his wife Lois, of 67 years, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His passing has left a hole but also so many great memories as husband, Dad, Grandpa and friend. Your suffering has ended Dad. Rest In Peace. You are loved.
Doug leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Lois (nee Waggoner), sons, Trent Birch (Rose) of Holland and Kevin Birch (Angeline) of Winnipeg, daughter Leigh Wood (Kevin) of Brandon; seven grandchildren, Craig, Christine (Ken), Lynne (Laurie), CiJae (Marcus), Michelle, Marc (Alicia) and Taylor (Rory), nine great-grandchildren, as well as numerous extended relatives.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Miriam Birch, and by numerous brothers and sisters.
A Come & Go Tea will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Treherne Villa, Treherne, MB. Cremation has taken place. Interment at a later date in the Woodlands Cemetery.
