DONALD ALBERT RICE
1933 - 2020
He was predeceased by his parents, Olive and Bernard Rice, his sister-in-law Helen Rice, and his niece Laurie (Rice) Barron.
In spite of many struggles, Don overcame obstacles throughout his life and was very proud to be a CPA. After graduation in 1957 he worked with George A. Touché & Co. (student); Osler, Hammond & Nanton (Manager of Securities Accounting); Westfair Foods Ltd. (Internal Auditor): and Jenkins Groceterias (Treasurer). He also became the Director of Education for the Institute of Chartered Accountants and worked with Champs Fine Foods (Comptroller); McCabe Grain (Accountant); United Way of Winnipeg (Comptroller) and lastly, the Province of Manitoba as the Director of Financial and Administrative Services before his retirement.
Proud as he was of his accomplished career, to his family he was so much more!
Don was curious about world religions and cuisine and was an accomplished cook. He was an avid reader, enjoying many genres but especially mysteries and cookbooks.
The Christmas dinners at his home were splendid affairs of lavish decorations, delicious food and many, many thoughtful gifts. He was open-minded and compassionate, with a love for animals, especially his precious pugs.
He was our family historian, keeping us connected to our English, Irish and American family, and chronicling births, deaths and marriages.
He was feisty, funny, interested in others, and involved in numerous volunteer capacities both before and after retirement.
Don was a generous man supporting those charities his heart belonged to.
He was a quiet, gentle and independent man, known as "Great Don" to his many nieces and nephews and will be missed by his brothers, Allan (Robin) and Robert (Anne) and their families.
Donations may be made to Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba, 4 Fort Street, Ste. 100, Winnipeg, MB R3C 1C4.
At Don's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral.
Rest in Peace Great Don ...
you were much loved.

I first knew Don as a child during WWII growing up in Winnipeg His mother and dad watched over our family while my father was overseas Don and his brothers became my cousins. I stayed closer to Don over the years especially when he visited our family in Detroit. When email came to be we swapped family stories. I will miss him - Posted by: Gerry flood (Cousin) on: Apr 25, 2020
