ILENE MIRIAM SHRAGGE
September 5, 1952 - May 1, 2020

Surrounded by her loving children, our beloved mother, sister and friend passed away after a courageous battle with breast cancer at the age of 67.
Ilene is survived by her two daughters, Brenlee Erenberg and Carly Erenberg (Alexander Imhoff); sister Lynne (Allan) Becker; sister-in-law Lynn Shragge, and several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Ilene was predeceased by her daughter Marni Portman; brother David Shragge; father Phineas Shragge, and mother Betty Shragge.
Ilene was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and moved to Winnipeg at the age of 18 to follow family roots and enter nursing school. When her children were young, Ilene played an instrumental role in founding the Hebrew bilingual program at Brock Corydon School. Ilene wanted the flexibility to spend as much time with her three girls as possible, while still being able to work. As she had always been interested in sales, she joined the Tupperware world. Ilene quickly became an Executive Tupperware Manager showing strong leadership skills and continued on this path for 22 years. With this job came many perks, like vehicles and a trip to Hawaii - her favourite place. Most important were the lifelong friendships that she developed throughout her career.
Ilene was a dedicated mother first and foremost; her greatest love were her children. She treasured her girls and embraced every moment with them. She was a kind, gentle soul who would win people over in an instant. Ilene was gracious and appreciative, even of the tiniest gesture. She never complained, overcoming whatever challenges came her way with strength and determination. Ilene was funny, striking at the perfect moment to lighten the mood. She was selfless and truly saw the best in people. Ilene was always there to listen and never to judge or criticize.
Ilene's family wish to send a special thank you to Dr. John Embil, Dr. James Bras, Dr. Justin Ling, Dr. Bruce Martin and Palliative Care nurses, Lisa and Jennifer (two angels) for their exemplary care and dedication. You made such difficult times a little easier through your kindness and compassion, and for that we are forever grateful.
A private graveside service was held on Monday, May 4 at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. The service can be viewed by searching the 'szwinnipeg' YouTube page.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ilene's name may be made to the 'Shragge Memorial Award in Medicine', University of Alberta, Office of Advancement, 1-780-492-7400, email: gratitude@ualberta.ca.

Mamashi, you will forever be loved
and missed.

  • We were fortunate to have many occasions to visit with Ilene during the wedding celebrations of Carly and Alex, family dinners or get-together arranged by Carly. I loved talking with her as she was an interesting person, but more importantly Ilene was interested in you. She asked questions and you always left the conversation feeling that we both knew a little bit more about each other. Her beautiful qualities of appreciation and truly listening to the other person have been passed on to her daughters. We will miss Ilene and we will always be there for her girls. - Posted by: Karen and Terry (Mother-in-law to our son Alex) on: May 12, 2020
