GERARD JOSEPH PRICE
March 4, 1945 - June 2, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Gerry's passing.
He is survived by his wife Nannette, brother Adrian (Diane); sisters, Clare and Caroline; sons, Brian (Dotti), David (Trish), Grier (Dawn), Trevor (Jeanette); and his grandchildren, Melody, Keenan, Kaily, Anika, Zachary, Jenna, Ainsley, Ava and Soryn who will all miss him dearly.
Born in Coatbridge, Scotland to Agnes and Charles Price, Gerry started playing the piano at three years old and continued to play and teach for the rest of his life. At 14 years old, he immigrated to Winnipeg with his family. He attended St. Paul's High School where he was inspired to join the Jesuits which later led him to Gonzaga University. There he earned his degrees in philosophy and music and met his wife, Nannette. They were married for over 51 years, building a life and, most importantly, a family.
Gerry was well known in Winnipeg for his musical talents and creativity. He taught music in Winnipeg School Division and private piano; he and Nannette were music ministers at Christ the King church; and he was inducted onto the Rainbow Stage Wall of Fame for his tireless service and commitment. Even in retirement he brought music to his new community in Rossport, Ontario where he created and directed the North Shore Singers. In addition to music, Gerry loved to sail and loved carpentry resulting in 15 years spent at Gimli Yacht Club with his family and five years restoring a wooden Lightning.
Gerry had the unique ability to inspire others to be more than they thought they could be, to think bigger and reach for the stars. His fight with cancer, Multiple Myeloma, was the most inspiring feat one could witness; his hope and his drive to live was beyond words, and instills great pride in those closest to him.
Gerry was a great husband, dad, grandfather, brother, musician, artist, sailor, cook, and whiskey lover. He will be greatly missed.
Due to the pandemic a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • Gerry was a great neighbour and a person always ready to help out. Nannette, we are so sorry for your loss. Ray & Diana - Posted by: Ray Hayes (Former Neighbour ) on: Jul 18, 2020

  • Nanette, the Isaac Family from Gimli were very sad to hear of Gerry's passing. As one of the founding families of Gimli Yacht Club it is with fond memories that we remember your family being so present in the activities of the club and the life long enjoyment of sailing. Only a week ago my youngest daughter and family bought a wood Lightning from a woman in the Whiteshell. The boat is beautiful, the likes I have not seen before. On closing the sale the woman, who had spent 25 years sailing it with her husband, produced a bill of sale from 1987 stating the name of the owner as Gerry Price. She will sail this beautiful boat on Lake Winnipeg again and it's funny how good things often come full circle in life. All the best to you and family. We remember you, Gerry and family fondly. - Posted by: Peter Isaac (Old sailing friend) on: Jun 27, 2020

  • I had the honor of working along side Gerry at Tec Voc for 8 years. We shared the Music department and enjoyed the challenges and successes. He introduced me to the complexities of producing quality high school Musical Theatre shows. And did so with great skill and dedication. He had positively influenced many many students over the years. He often spoke of retiring on Lake Superior. Gerry was well respected in the music community and will be missed. - Posted by: Trevor Uruski (Teacher colleague) on: Jun 25, 2020

  • I am deeply saddened to hear of Gerry's (Mr. Price's) passing. My years as a student at Gordon Bell High School were spent singing (with proper diaphragm support, of course) in his choirs and on the high school stage. Later, he was our tireless musical director for my 4 trips to Rainbow Stage as a chorus member. His grace under pressure, his enthusiasm, his inspiration and his sheer love of music was a difference-maker in my life and I am forever profoundly grateful for his part and influence in my life. Thank you Gerry, for your work and your life with all of us, we are the better because of your efforts to join with each other in music. My condolences to Nanette and your family, Gerry and wish you rest and a conductor's baton. Once more, from the Coda... - Posted by: David McKenzie (former student) on: Jun 16, 2020

  • I had the true honor of spending several years with MR. Price. I was lucky enough to be casted as Tony in West Side Story and Don Quixote in Man of LaMancha. Gerry spent endless hours with me helping me musically. He was a very talented man. Fond memories....RIP. Barry T. - Posted by: Barry T (Student) on: Jun 15, 2020

  • I am very saddened with the news of Mr. Price. I give my sincerest condolences to Mr. Price’s family. He was my favorite teacher and gave me the best experiences/memories in high school. I love the performing arts and I am forever thankful he casted me as lead role in West Side Story in 2003! He was a great influential person, where most students looked up to! He pushed me to my limits because he believed in the potential I had and for that I am forever grateful. Thank you Mr. Price for being the best at what you do. Your love for music, the performing arts, and teaching will forever live on in the students and their memories that you made an impact on. - Posted by: Melanie Centeno l (Student) on: Jun 15, 2020

  • My condolences to Mr. Price's family & friends. He was always very kind to me in his English and Music classes, he had showed me musical compassion when I wasn't a good enough singer to be in the "Swing Choir", he created a guitar part for me to be involved in the show. He gave me great confidence to be a musician, a tremendous gift. Thank you Mr. Price, well done. - Posted by: Shayne Lewis (Student) on: Jun 14, 2020

  • He touched many lives on the north shore. Gerry was an exacting director but conducted our little choir in his gentle (and compassionate) way. We will miss him - Posted by: Janet and Jon (Friends) on: Jun 14, 2020

  • Mr. Price was in charge of Gordon Bell’s production of the musical “Oliver” in 1975. He saw potential and talent in me where others had not and gave me the support and confidence to perform beyond my aspirations. I was so pleased to see him teaching at Tec Voc when my own children went there, although they were not inclined to participate in any music programs at the school. I often remember him with appreciation and great fondness. - Posted by: Kim Sheppard (nee Baker) (Former student) on: Jun 14, 2020

  • I went to Tec Voc in 1991(?) which was Mr. Price's first year there. I landed the lead role of Tony Brockhurst in "The Boyfriend" which he directed. Mr. Price was a fantastic man, and a Magnificent music mind.... he will be sadly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his Family & Friends. - Posted by: Scott Chabluk (Student (former)) on: Jun 13, 2020

  • I remember being part of the West Side Story musical and meeting Mr Price for the first time. I sang some rnb song and he didn’t like it, so he told me to sing O Canada. He ended up casting me as Bernardo, and told me to join jazz choir. It was one of my best memories of high school. Mr Price had high expectations of all of his students, and he would push you to be better than you were. He had a way of teaching where he would give meaning to the music by asking “what is the emotion the song is trying to portray?” And just like that everything would click. Mr price made me realize who I was in high school, and for that I am forever grateful. Love you big poppa price. - Posted by: John arce (Jazz choir student technical vocational school 03-04) on: Jun 13, 2020

  • My heart goes out to you all in this devastating moment. For Gerry his battle is over, but for you his nearest and dearest the loss must be overwhelming. Gerry and I were cousins as my mother and his father were brother and sister. We were very close as families in Scotland and when Uncle Charlie preceded his family’s migration to Winnipeg, Gerry and his sister Caroline lived with us in Coatbridge until they were united as a family in Canada. Although the miles seperate us I feel for you all and send you my sympathy and love. Your cousin Mary - Posted by: Mary Hayward (Cousin to Gerry) on: Jun 13, 2020
