STEPHEN RICHARD SMITH
Left to mourn his loss are his son Stephen Tristan (Chantelle); brothers, Johnston, Daniel (Kirstin) and Peter (Simone); sister Barbara; and his stepchildren, Justin and Jillian Bagan. Steve is also remembered by Anessa and Andrew Milejszo, his sister-in-law Diane Trenholm; and by his former wife Kim Lawlor. Steve was predeceased by his brother Jeffrey; his wife Barbara; and by his father and mother.
Steve was born in Toronto on August 1, 1951 to Johnston and Jacqueline Smith. He and his siblings had a happy childhood. Steve particularly enjoyed visiting his grandparent's cottage in the Kawartha district and had a great love of the outdoors and the Arctic throughout his life. In 1975 he married Barbara (Basia) Milejszo and soon began working for Environment Canada, a position which took them to Baker Lake, Estevan and Churchill, and Steve also went alone to many points in the Arctic, as far as Alert. In 1981, Tristan was born, the joy of their lives. When Barbara died tragically in 1988, Steve returned to Winnipeg and devoted himself to raising his son. Steve doted on Tristan and was particularly proud of Tristan's achievements as a barrister. He was devoted to his extended family, especially to his mother.
Steve was self-educated and very well read, especially in 20th century history. He had an extraordinary memory. He loved a lively discussion and did not shy away from sharing his views. His wit and his keen sense of irony peppered his observations. Although he endured many hardships, his resilience and his faith, especially in his later years, carried him through. He is deeply missed by all who know him.
Given current regulations, there will be no public funeral but immediate family will commit him to God at 11:00 a.m. on June 19, 2020, at the St. Vital Catholic Church, 1629 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB, with Fr. Mark A. Tarrant officiating.
Prior to the Funeral Mass, those who wish to pay their respects are invited to join the family at the church in small groups, respecting the current restrictions on gatherings, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Those who wish to do so are invited to donate to the Main Street Project in Steve's memory.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)
I recall Steve being like having that cool, intelligent uncle. Quick witted and certainly knew his history. Was able to tease him when I was able to win him at Backgammon. Steve introduced to me to a lot of good music back in the day that you don't hear today being produced. Like some of us he was dealt with some tough life issues. I send my condolences to the Smith family and have kept my thoughts and prayers in Steve's memory. May he rest in eternal peace. - Posted by: Andrew Milejszo (Brother-in Law ) on: May 15, 2021
