SHIRLEY LOCKHART GORDON
Shirley was born July 14, 1930, in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Charles and Margaret Moline. She was married to Lorne Joseph Gordon for 51 years and was the receptionist for his home-based painting and decorating business while raising a family. Shirley was predeceased by her infant daughter Catherine in 1958 and her husband Lorne in 2004. As a stay-at-home mom, her children, Michael, Gary and Tracy were the center of Shirley's attention. She later took on the role of grandma to all of her grandchildren with great delight. Shirley had several budgies as companions over the years and loved all birds in nature.
Born during the Great Depression, Shirley's life was a struggle from the beginning. She was a selfless person who would give away everything she had to a stranger in need, always putting others ahead of herself. Her sense of compassion for those less fortunate was passed down to her children who continue to embody her sense of fairness and empathy toward others.
Shirley lived in her Fort Garry home for 65 years, and chose to stay there on her own for the last 15. She spent the past three months isolated in hospital and long-term care due to the restrictions placed on her by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was an unbearable challenge for her and family, yet she faced it with courage and grace.
Shirley is survived by her sister Carol; her three children and their spouses, Mike (Lisa) Gordon, Gary Gordon and Kathy Kovacs, and Tracy (Bob) Peters; grandchildren, Chase, Adam, Andrea, Alex, James, Jenna, Mike and Victoria; and her many nieces and nephews. All of them she loved and touched deeply.
A celebration of her life will be held at a future date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Winnipeg Harvest or a local food bank of choice.
