JAMES HUGH DUNCAN SMEATON
February 12, 1940 - April 19, 2020

Duncan passed away after a brief illness with lymphoma cancer.
He is fondly remembered and very much missed by his wife Sheila, son Jamie, daughter-in-law Kelly and his two grandsons, Max and Daniel.
Duncan was born in Toronto but spent most of his school years in Winnipeg. He attained a master's degree in economics and computer science at the University of Manitoba where he met his wife Sheila. Duncan was a lifelong learner and was always engaged in some sort of academic pursuit, including publishing 'Deflated' a book on economic theories.
After graduation Duncan and Sheila moved to Vancouver where Duncan worked for BC Telephone for a number of years, including an overseas assignment in Indonesia, and later Group Telecom where he retired as a director. In retirement Duncan and Sheila travelled to many countries in Europe and Asia and enjoyed being a part of Max and Daniel's activities.
Baboo, as Max and Daniel called him, was always ready to play or talk or give a hug when needed. He spent many hours creating a Halloween event in the garden each year to the delight of children and adults alike.
There will be a family graveside service. We hope to have a Celebration of Life for Duncan when it is safe to do so.
We would like to thank the doctors and medical staff who helped with Duncan's care, it was much appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Goodbye, Dunc. I'll always remember you for your unique sense of humour (sometimes at my expense, and always witty). My heartfelt sympathies to you and your family Sheila, over your great loss. - Posted by: Bill Rayner (Old Friend) on: Jul 09, 2020

  • Evie my wife and I send our condolences to Sheila and the family on Duncan's death. As teenagers Duncan and I listened to Brubeck late at night, played scrum hockey early in the morning at Crescentwood Community Centre, and drove to university in his unheated Model A in Winnipeg mid-winters. Also, Evie went with Duncan to Commencement at St. John's College in about 1959. We lost touch until about a decade ago when Duncan attended a St. John's College reunion, and more recently, when I phoned him to ask if his family were in any way connected with the Smeeton who settled at Musgrave Landing on Salt Spring where our daughter now lives. Duncan said not, but invited us to visit sometime and renew friendships. Sadly, death has intervened. We loved him. - Posted by: john tanner (friend from school and university) on: Jul 08, 2020
