LEOLA SIGURBJORG JONASSON
(nee GISLASON)
August 20, 1944 - July 9, 2020
Left to honour her memory is her husband of 57 years, Halli Jonasson, daughters, Laurie (Sid) and Denise, son David, grandchildren, Samantha, Akilena and Haley, Daniel, Jordan and Jason, Halli, and great-grandson Leo. She was predeceased by Sam and Runa Gislason, and her daughter Nadine.
Leola was born in Selkirk and grew up in Riverton - a lifelong resident. She raised her family near her childhood home beside the Icelandic River. Working at the Co-op in Riverton for over 30 years, she was known for her kindness and friendliness to all her customers. She retired with Halli at the Icelandic River Lodge.
Leola loved to travel North to Whitehorse to see David, Laurie and her family, as well as west to St. Claude to visit Nadine and her family. Denise took her on trips enjoying many family reunions in Alberta, North Dakota and Montana. It was important for her to keep roots deep with family, and she loved the Icelandic history of our relatives instilled by her parents.
Mom loved her flowers and had a beautiful variety of orchids and African violets which were her pride and joy. She enjoyed many quiet times by the shores of Lake Winnipeg. She loved to help her children and was a beautiful wife, mom, amma and langamma. Leola will be sadly missed as she touched the heart of everyone deeply.
There will be a private family service due to the Covid-19 pandemic at the Riverton cemetery. A memorial service will be held August 22 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Riverton Hall.
Special thanks to the Arborg Hospital staff for their care of Leola during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Riverton Cemetery.
