LOEWEN: Walter Jacob Loewen passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Sunday, February 13, 2011, at the age of 86 years. Walter was born September 27, 1924 in Waterloo, Ontario. At the age of three, he moved to Moore Park, Manitoba. In the spring of 1940, they moved to the Justice area where he farmed with his dad. He attended Winkler Bible School for four years, graduating in 1950. Walter married Agnes Penner on June 19, 1954. Together they farmed on the oldhomestead of his parents, raising cattle, pigs, chickens, as well as growing grain. In 1966 the old farmhouse was sold, and he moved the family 1.5 miles NW to a new house and farm. Here they raised their family of three daughters and a son. Walter was very actively involved in the church, being pastor for fourteen years, Sunday school teacher, and choir director. He was an active member of the Gideons for many years. Walter loved to do mechanical work not only for himself, but for his brother Jake and any others who needed help. He could always be found in his shop fixing something. Great enjoyment was also found in singing and playing piano. Travelling also brought great joy to Walter, and he took his family on many wonderful vacations. In 1981, his life took a new direction - the purchase of the Evangel Book Store in Brandon, later moving to a larger store and renaming it the Lighthouse Bookstore. The farm was sold in 1992, and Brandon became their new home. Many years were spent enjoying city life, "semi retirement", and his grandchildren. We know he is now enjoying his new home in Heaven. Walter will always be remembered as a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather. Walter is survived by his loving wife Agnes of 56 years, daughters Marlene (Bill) Lecuyer, Laura (John) Downing, Judy (Brad) Dick, son Albert (Kim) Loewen, and grandchildren Christopher & Cherise Lecuyer;Cody and Brett Dick; Ryan, Brooke and Hailey Loewen. Also surviving are brother Jake (Marg) Loewen; sisters Erica (Jake) Harder; Martha (Ross) McMillan, Jessie (Dave) Penner. Walter was predeceased by sister Ruth Charbonneau and brother-in-law Charlie Charbonneau. The funeral service was held at the Justice M.B. Church, Justice, Manitoba on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Gerry Harms officiated. Interment took place at Sparling Cemetery. Donations in memory of Walter may be made to the Gideons, P.O. Box 3619 Stn. Main, Guelph, Ontario, N1H 7A2. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
