ELVERS: The family sadly reports the death of Bill Elvers in Brandon on February 8, 2016. William Henry Elvers was born June 29, 1916 to Allan and Mary Elvers. He attended Valley School for grades 1-8 and then went to Rossburn High School to complete grades 9-12. He worked at Jack Peden's farm for the year of 1938-39 to complete grades 11 and 12, and received room and board. There he worked long 18 hour days. He farmed on his own from 1940 until 1954, raising Hereford cattle and Clydesdale horses, winning prizes in local fairs as well as at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair - a champion in 1942. He and the horse had to ride the train all the way from Rossburn to Toronto to participate. While working at his farm Bill got acquainted with a young Rossburn teacher, Mable Parsons, and they were married on July 14, 1951 in Fort Frances, Ontario. In 1954 they sold his livestock and farm and moved to Roblin, Manitoba. There he worked as store manager for the retail Co-op. Bill enjoyed singing and was a member of the Rossburn and Roblin United Church choirs. In 1960 he was transferred to Brandon Co-op as the store manager. In 1962 he worked at Western Grocers Wholesale as District Sales Supervisor until June of 1981 when he retired. Bill enjoyed several sports including curling, ten pin bowling and golfing, and he won several trophies. From 1962 until present (2000) he had been a member of the city golf and recreation centre. He had assisted the golf pro in the junior golf program, was a member of the city golf advisory committee, and had also volunteered for 5 years as an instructor for a government sponsored golf program for 60 plus. He volunteered as the drawmaster for a senior golf program for the years 1983-1998, and at the age of 83 plus years Bill was active in sporting activities. Bill loved golf and was shooting his age even into his late 70s. Bill and Mable resided in Brandon where they not only took part in sporting activities but were proud of their garden at their Rosser Ave. property. Bill had a very nice demeanour and was a fine man. He was devoted to Mabel, and deeply missed her when she passed. Service arrangements were handled by Brockie-Donovan with interment later in the spring in Rosewood Cemetery.
