Mom was born in Sagathun, SK on July 17, 1926. She moved with her family to Woodmore, MB when she was 11 years old. While working at the Woodmore Store, she met Fred Steinke. They married on Apr. 21, 1949, and had three sons. She worked alongside Dad on the farm for nearly 50 years and even stayed on the farm by herself for nearly two years after Dad’s passing. She moved to Steinbach in 2000, purchasing her own house.
Mom loved to garden and maintained two large sections on the original farm where she kept the family fed with a wide variety of fresh vegetables all summer long. Her two green thumbs kept churning out the produce once she moved to Steinbach, working a large garden in the backyard. She won numerous awards for her canning, baking and stitch-work including a national award from The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Mom’s garden was an essential part of her identity and her life.
Special thanks to all those at the Bethesda Place Personal Care Home who made Mom’s final few weeks peaceful.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Linda may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
In accordance with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. Interment at Friedensthal Cemetery will be held at a later date.
When I am gone, release me, let me go
I have so many things to see and do,
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears;
Be happy that we had so many years
I gave to you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for all the love you each have shown,
But now it’s time I traveled on alone.
So grieve for a while for me if grieve you must;
Then let your grief be comforted by trust,
It’s only for a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on;
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see me or touch me, I’ll be near
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear
All of my love around you soft and clear.
And then when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and say “Welcome home”.
