April 27, 1962 – December 16, 2015
"How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yea faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy for the living God" (Psalm 84 verses 1 &2)
Lynnette's petition to God to be freed from her struggles and to be in the courts of the Lord has finally been granted. God called her to join him in his eternal home early on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. With that Lynnette silently "folded her tent" and with no obvious physical struggle in the end, bade us her final farewell.
Cheryl Lynnette was born on April 27, 1962, to Abe and Thelma Penner. Little Lintie's arrival (as her adoring Dad loved to call her) was greeted with great joy and anticipation! Why? Three brothers, rambunctious, tough, and sometimes trouble makers, had preceded her, and Mom and Dad were ready for someone more sedate and calm. But alas, that was not to be. She joined Randy and Darrel and me in as many shenanigans as we allowed her to! Someone had to be in control right!
When Lynnette was in grade four, at the age of nine she accepted Jesus as her personal Savior. She never left the faith and always, in spite struggling through many problems and issues, claimed God as her constant friend.
Lynnette's early school years (1-9) were spent at the Blumenort School. She went to the University of Winnipeg collegiate where she graduated from grade 12, and above all met the true love of her life, Jerome Ferguson. They married on December 17, 1983 on an authentic, miserably cold Manitoba winter day, at the Elim Chapel in Winnipeg. This was one of the best days of her life, and truly a happy occasion for her.
She continued her education at the University of Winnipeg, in Sociology, but eventually transferred to the University of Manitoba, where she took courses in Social work. Lynnette always had a heart for those who were less fortunate and consequently took a job at the Jesse Group Home, a home for delinquent girls. She was well suited for this work, since she was tough, and she herself had experienced difficult times in her teenage years. She also did some work in home care and loved the challenges that came with this type of work.
In 1989 she and Jerome moved to Burlington, Ontario, where Jerome supply taught, and she worked in a ladies shelter in Milton. Because of medical problems she was forced to quit her job.
In the fall of 1996 they moved back to Manitoba. The move was very timely since now she could be with Mom after Dad died just a short while later in spring of 1997. She and Jerome built a house directly across the street from Mom and Dad, and after Dad died they invited Mom to live with them.
In 2004 she and Jerome received a chosen daughter Malayka, from Haiti, who became the apple of Lynnette's eyes.
Lynnette was preceded in death by Mom and Dad, a baby brother Hilton Kent (who died in infancy) and father-in-law James Ferguson. She leaves to mourn her husband Jerome, daughter Malayka, three brothers and their wives, Randy (Adele), Reg (Ingrid) and Darrel(Cari), her mother-in-law Rose, her brothers-in-law Swithun and Purcell and sister-in-law Emlyn, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
We will miss the Lynnette we knew before she was fraught by so many emotional and physical struggles. We will all miss the beautiful blue-eyed gal who had an infectious laugh, mischievous eyes, and was a vivacious debater, particularly when the topics were political, and her compassionate nature that she practiced so liberally.
Rest in peace Lynnette enjoy the rest you so much deserve.
The funeral service for Lynnette will be held on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with the interment to follow at the Blumenort EMC Cemetery, Blumenort, MB. The viewing will take place prior to the service.
If friends so desire, donations in memory of Lynnette may be made to the Bethesda Foundation, 316 Henry Street, Steinbach, MB, R5G 0P9.
