JUDITH STOKES
(nee MAYO)
Left to cherish the love she gave us are her daughter, Karen Stokes, son, Gord Stokes (Nancy), chosen daughter, Marie Larsen (Ron), son-in-law, Steve Brockington, grandchildren, Hayley (Kasali), Chelsea, and Cole Baker (Ashley), Owen Nicholson (Julie), Alexis Brockington (Ryan), Ben and Elise Stokes, Tyler (Kirsten) and Mathew MacNeish, Courtney Deleurme (Dave), nine great-grandchildren, brothers, Hugh Mayo (Mary) of Kamloops, and Gerald (Rachel) and Michael (Joanne) Mayo of Selkirk, as well as numerous nieces and nephews across the country.
A very special thanks to our cousin, Kathy Boushie, who provided friendship, care, and compassion during Mom's final years.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, Sid and Katherine Mayo, husband and soul mate, Richard (Dick), and her beloved daughter, Cheryl. We take great comfort that they are now all together again.
Judy was born July 28, 1941 in Selkirk, Manitoba. She grew up there before moving as a teenager to start a new life in Winnipeg. Marrying Dick in 1961, and raising her family in St. James.
Throughout her life, Mom was huge Bomber and Jet fan, an avid curler, bowler, line dancer, bingo master, and card game addict. She worked for many years for Manitoba Highways and Transportation and made many lifelong friends in the process.
The best times of her life were spending time with Dick, family, and friends at the cottage at Glen Bay. Nothing made her happier and more filled with love than having her children and grandchildren all around her. Live, Love, Laugh was Mom's mantra long before it became popular.
After Dick's passing, Mom spent her summers at Wildwood Park in Winnipeg Beach where she met some of the most wonderful people a friend could ask for. Many thanks to the angels there, who always helped her, provided friendship, laughter, and most of all love. She always spoke of and expressed her love for the crew at WildWood.
The family would like to offer our sincere thanks to Dr. Coyle, Dr. Benerji, and the staff at CancerCare, Palliative Care and the team of caregivers on 3E at Riverview Health Centre, and the incredibly understanding, compassionate staff at the Grace Hospice.
No service will be held at this time due to current restrictions. A service will be announced later.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
A Mom's hug lasts long after she lets go.

My deepest condolences to Judy's family. I worked in the DDVL building for a few years while Judy was the staff member who greeted people as they entered the building. I remember as always having a smile on her face and something pleasant to say. She was a beautiful person and I'm very saddened to hear of her passing. She touched many staff members with her outgoing personality. Judy was a very special lady. - Posted by: Brenda Plohman (Former Co-worker) on: Nov 20, 2020

Judy you will be truly misses by one and all that knew you. But knowing you are back with Dick and Cheryl is what you wanted. I know that. Judy was a great sewer and I still have the teddy bear she made me from my hubby's shirt he wore in Hawaii that she made after he passed away. I also know that you and Dick are right around the corner in the niche where Howard is so I will visit you every time I am there. R.I.P. my dearest friend. - Posted by: Margaret Wilkins (Friend for over 40 years.) on: Nov 15, 2020

Judy was the sweetest, loving and kindest person I have ever meet. She offered to take my oldest daughter Ashley in while I was working. I know with her warmth kind heart made my daughter the loving kind successful person she is today. At the time I had no family in Winnipeg and she just adopted us. She taught me how to be a better mother and I couldn’t thank her enough for her kindness. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen Judy but always knew I’d be greeted with her fabulous hugs. Rest Judy and know how many people heart you touched. ❤️ - Posted by: Colleen Shaw (Friend ) on: Nov 14, 2020

Judy used to care for me as a baby and young child. She took me and my family in as if we were her own. I remember eating broccoli for the first time in her kitchen (and then throwing up), and her getting me to try ketchup on my KD. I remember dressing up in her clothes, and spending Christmas Eve with their family. I grew up close to the whole family, and was even the flower girl in Karen’s wedding. I had kept in touch with Judy throughout the years through social media sharing our memories. She was such a special women and will be missed beyond measure. My condolences to the whole family. RIP Beautiful. - Posted by: Ashley Vendramelli (Family friend) on: Nov 14, 2020

Words cant express how much I loved her. She taught me patience and understanding, and a prime example of how to work through the tough times that life throws our way. A fighter to the end. Selfless and loving. RIP my GrandMOM. - Posted by: Marie Larsen (Adopted daughter) on: Nov 14, 2020

In the last few years I was keeping in touch with Judy. We had quite a few chuckles and talked about many things together. She was the one who directed us to our new home 8 years ago,and for that I am truly grateful. Her humor was amazing and her compassion for others was wonderful. She was always so positive about life and I really loved her....Meet you on the other side Jud....xoxo Terri McDonald - Posted by: terri mcdonald (cousin) on: Nov 14, 2020
