Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I'd like to offer my condolences to Dorothy, Kathy and George at the passing of John. We knew one another in the "St. Bede's" years as co-parishoners. What great years they were. The wonderful parish events which the Funnell family was a big part of, in organizing.... particularly the plays and musicals. My memory of John is that he had a lovely sense of humour and almost always had an infectious grin and big smile to share with friends. His wise council was much appreciated when there were problems to be solved. I would say: "A life well lived." - Posted by: Catherine Lee (friend) on: Apr 11, 2021

  • I was General Manager at SAM Management and John was a tenant at Agape Villa and was a representative on the Board of Directors. I attended many board meetings and always admired John's wit and common sense. Always happy to see you, had great input and made going to a meeting just that much nicer. He cared about Agape Villa, the residents and ensured we were making good decisions. Over my years at SAM, I got to know many residents and some stick with you. John was one of them. My condolences to Dorothy and to all John's family and friends. - Posted by: Laurie Socha (GM of Property Management company that John & Dorothy resided in) on: Mar 30, 2021

  • It was our Privilege and Good Fortune having known John and briefly his wife also. To us, John was a humble Human Being of the highest level. We, among many, were grateful recipients of his helpfulness. Rest In Peace, John! We will remember You! • I was the 20 year old Receptionist in the Executive Offices of Manitoba Hydro in 1966 and was relieving for John’s Secretary. My Mom was in hospital and the hospital called for me to come! John drove me to hospital. After my Mom passed and I went back to work John looked after my Mom’s frugal estate for free. John was a kind, thoughtful, wonderful man. - Posted by: JoAnne Williams (Co -worker) on: Mar 30, 2021

  • I have a great many memories of my Poppa, John Funnell. He first taught me how to use a computer as a kid, and let me borrow his PC to play computer games on sometimes. I used to help him organise his vast CD collection, helping him pack or unpack the ones that would make the trip to Victoria Beach each season. He always had some good advice, an interesting story or a funny limerick to hand. He was well-known for being able to make up limericks on the spot! I am truly blessed to have had him as a grandfather. I have too many good stories and memories to record here. So many long summer days at Victoria Beach, spring and autumn weekend afternoons with Grandma and Poppa living downstairs in our granny flat at Farwell Bay, and of course the occasional visit in Phoenix, Arizona, back when they had their trailer down there to avoid the Canadian winters. I'm lucky to have a few things that used to belong to Poppa - gifts that I'll continue to treasure for the rest of my life. I'm also glad that my fiancé, Nick, got to meet him the last time we were in Winnipeg. I'll miss him always. - Posted by: Karen Bachynski (Granddaughter) on: Mar 29, 2021

  • My years working with John at Manitoba Hydro have so many great memories and we kept in touch over the years. I knew something was wrong when nothing came from him last Christmas and am devastated to hear that he has left us for a better place. Many, many condolences, Dorothy, and your family - I know just how much he will be missed. My thoughts are very often with those years and all the many things that happened. John and I certainly worked very well together and I will treasure those memories. With great sadness and prayers for the family! • Dorothy and family: Mavis and I were sorry to learn of John's passing. He was a kind, considerate, and joyful person. At Manitoba Hydro, John was very cheerful and competent in counselling staff on business matters. He was a great guy to work with. We enjoyed our visits during our winters in Arizona. May your many pleasant memories of John give you comfort. - Posted by: Will Tishinski (friend) on: Mar 27, 2021
