BEATRIZ CORNELIA AUGUSTA ZENTNER
(nee HORVATH)
April 3, 1950 - May 20, 2021

Beatriz passed away peacefully at the age of 71, surrounded by her loving daughter and son, Rayna Wallace and Lev (Erica) Zentner.
"Bibi" will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Noah, Lumin and Remi. She is also survived by her sister Maria (John) Horvath and will be missed by her dear friends who helped her throughout her courageous battle.
Beatriz was born in Bogotá, Colombia, where she spent her early years before her parents moved to Canada and settled in Winnipeg in 1956.
Combining her love of both cultures, she had a creative flare, a knack for perfection and the confidence to bet on herself when it mattered most. She founded the children's wear boutique Oma's, and her oft-spoken love of life and her own children soon extended to many. Oma's flourished for 25+ years as it evolved into a uniform school for St. John's Ravenscourt school.
In her own life, Beatriz invested deeply in her friends. Her generous spirit always gave time and effort to any problem or project, and she revelled in her friends' success. In turn she was admired by so many for her vivacious spirit and varied strengths. She never stopped dressing to the nines for any occasion.
Beatriz always sought out what was good in life, and she knew a good thing when she saw it. Even more rare, she could identify what could make something even better. When she found it, she took along her family and friends to share her passions.
An avid athlete herself, she passed on a love of sport and competition to her kids. More lasting friendships were made and memories cherished.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Beatriz always called to keep in touch in her trademark fashion: "What's doing?" In her later years, she found a zestful second act on the West Coast, and could usually be found on Victoria's Bear Mountain Golf Course enjoying the beautiful scenery and her cherished friendships.
For all the ways she'll be remembered, above all, she taught us gratitude. "Isn't it nice we're all together?" she'd often say.
Yes it was. A dear friend to many. She will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Beatriz can be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

  • I am so sad to hear of Beatriz’s passing. I had the amazing opportunity to work for her over a few summers at the SJR uniform shop, where she taught me so much about everything - from how to size a customer with one look, to how to work with and manage people, eat sushi, and schmooze while getting the job done. I’ve always considered her one of my mentors, and I am eternally grateful for everything she taught me. She was intelligent, worldly, had a fabulous and dry sense of humour, and was by far the classiest person I have ever met. May her memory be a blessing. Sending my love to her family. • We were saddened to hear of Beatriz's passing and send our condolences to Rayna, Lev, her precious grandchildren and Maria. Our mothers were close friends and colleagues and we got to know her and Maria at quite a young age. Over the years we were in contact until she moved out to the coast where we regrettably lost touch. I have fond memories of working at Oma's one summer just before starting my teaching career. Beatriz had all those qualities one appreciates in a friend and I'll always be glad I knew her. One never knows when life will end and Beatriz made sure she filled hers with interesting successful ventures and lots of love for her children.
